Joe Canning and his nephew Jack were both in inspirational form for Portumna in Loughrea yesterday as they beat Craughwell 2-10 to 0-13 to make the quarter-final stage of the Galway SHC.
Former Hurler of the Year Joe, in his first year out of inter-county following his retirement from the Galway set-up last summer, fired 1-8, including 1-1 from play, while Jack Canning revelled in his role at wing-back. Three-time All-Ireland SHC winners Portumna are now back in the last-eight in the race for the Callanan Cup after dicing with relegation in recent years.
Cappataggle are also through to the quarter-finals following their 0-17 to 0-10 win over Moycullen at Pearse Stadium. Jarlath Mannion and Liam Collins stood out for the winners.
Meanwhile, Ahascragh-Fohenagh secured their senior status for 2023 with a narrow 1-13 to 1-12 defeat of Tynagh-Abbey/Duniry in the relegation final.
