A win over Mount Leinster Rangers on Monday would see Portumna move ahead of fellow Galway side Athenry in the All-Ireland Club SHC roll of honour.
Portumna are bidding for a fourth Tommy Moore Cup success and former Athenry and Galway star Joe Rabbitte expects Joe Canning & Co to complete the job at the expense of the competition's surprise packets.
Their greater experience should be a decisive factor, Rabbitte told the Irish Examiner.
"Mount Leinster Rangers have come from nowhere, won a very good championship in Leinster and beat the 2012 champions in the All-Ireland semi-final, but Portumna have the experience and that could be crucial in Croke Park."
A holder of eight county and three All-Ireland medals, the two-time All-Star revealed the secrets behind the success of Galway clubs in the competition.
"Club hurling is strong in Galway because the clubs are so united in themselves, and that's what it's all about, camaraderie, club spirit. That tells when you go outside the county. It's a closer bond than anything you'll have with the county!"
