You're probably right. I do think Beirne deserves one. Also Jordan Flynn will be unlucky to miss out. He was a leader all year.

Is it not the players who pick the 2 POTY awards?

Journalists pick the all star team.

Replying To fainleog:  "I think Darragh Beirne should get young player of the year, his contribution in the All-Ireland final was huge, scoring that
great goal and scoring 1-3 in total was so significant. He also played a significant part in general play. He also scored a total of 3-18 in the championship. A significant weighting has to be given for his performance in the All-Ireland final.
Who was the Mayo player that punched the ball out the field on the 67th minute when Paudie Clifford attempted to pass to a colleague?. That was an important interception, although Kerry won the ball back further out."
I think that was Paddy Durcan

Replying To FullOfPorter:  "That has to be Beirne. Kobe McDonald is a brilliant raw talent but I think the media hype over-amplifies the actual performances. I would say he has had great moments but Darragh Beirne put in more consistent performances."
Darragh Beirne would be a worthy winner too but Kobe was consistently very good since his debut vs Monaghan in the league.

0-6 vs Roscommon in connacht championship. Our best player on that bleak day
1-4 vs Monaghan in a one point win
3 points in the first half vs meath when we were being destroyed all over the pitch
4 points from play in All Ireland quarter final
4 points from play in All Ireland semi final
3 points in second half of All Ireland final

Kobe also had some eye catching displays of high fielding throughout the championship.

I'd give Beirne the all star and Kobe YPOTY….for sheer impact from a school kid. Beirne consistently was excellent all year.

Nobody on this thread or the Roscommon thread is saying that Kobe is not have an excellent player or did not have a great year. The point is that Diarmuid Murtagh and Darragh Beirne had better years and deserve an All Star awards/ young player of the year ahead of Kobe. He is still an outstanding talent as are both Diarmuid and Darragh.

Your post details how Kobe scored a total of 1-24 in the championship with his best days being 1-4 against Monaghan and 0-6 against Roscommon. I think he also scored 0-3 against Tyrone in the championship. Diarmuid Murtagh scored a total of 1-31 in the championship including 1-10 against Mayo, 0-8 against Tyrone and 0-7 against Galway in the Connacht final. (All top teams) Kobe also played in the All Ireland quarter final, semi final and final and still did not come near Diarmuid's total championship score. (If you discount those 3 matches it would be 1-31 against 1-16 including the three extra Kobe points against Tyrone)

Kobe only scored 1-7 in division 1 of the National League while Diarmuid Murtagh scored an outstanding 4-30.
Every one is entitled to their view but I would certainly not like Diarmuid of Darragh to lose out on any deserved award due to excess media hype. That is the reality as far as I am concerned and I do not expect many in Mayo will agree with me.

I wish Kobe McDonald the very best in Australia and I have no doubt that he will be a major success. He comes across as a lovely guy and the hype created by the media was certainly not his creation or fault.

Did you mean to reply to me?

I was debating the merits of Kobe vs Beirne for young POTY.

Kobe definitely deserves it ahead of 31 year old Diarmuid Murtagh. Not sure why you brought him up.

I agree that Murtagh should get an All Star but hard to believe that those selecting the All Star team won't include Kobe. Is there any possibility that David Clifford, Diarmuid Murtagh, Darragh Beirne, Ryan O'Don̈oghue and Kobe could all be picked?

Sad news in Mayo today with the passing of our county chairman Seamus Tuohy. RIP.

Of course there is a possibility. The selection is 6 forwards from the selection 18. The old days of selecting players in a set position or number on their back of jersey is long gone

That's a shock on Seamus Tuohy. RIP.

This is a cringy post. Murtagh is a class act but himself and Kobe are 2 totally different players. Murtagh wouldn't be losing out due to hype. Kobe is 18 and had a brilliant year. Was excellent in open play when Mayo got to Croke Park. Was a workhorse when needed and chipped in when scores were needed. Was outstanding in 2nd half of final also. All Stars and All Irelands are not handed out in early summer. Lord knows Mayo posters have been told that often enough on here. Rightly or wrongly they are based mainly on the last 3 games in championship.

It's like the embarrassing posts on twitter saying ROD should not be player of the year. It's pure pettiness. Clifford is the best player in the land but in 2026 ROD was the most influential player at the business end of the championship and I don't think I have seen a player cover more ground than him in Croke Park this year. Everyone should watch the 2nd half of the final and follow him on camera. Mental stuff.

Really don't know how anyone could argue against ROD. Man of the match in semi and final. Hugely consistent for Mayo all year. Puts in a massive shift for Mayo every time.

I know what people are saying on Kobes age and without doubt played well. But there is no argument with Darragh Beirne in my eyes. I think Geaney is ahead of Kobe in all star rankings as well. Considering his club and County form.

Agree 100%. Kobe had a massive impact on Mayo's fortunes in the year's championship. He does a lot more than just chip in with scores. His ball carrying ability is brilliant and he covers an incredible amount of ground. As you mentioned, he caught some crucial ball as well.
I'm a massive fan of Diarmuid Murtagh. A real classy player, brilliant kicker and heavy scorer.
