Yeah it's not a great website really but its says theyre playing in kilbeacanty this Saturday.

Championship gets under way this weekend lads. Who are your choices for winning out the senior and the premier?? Clarinbridge will be there thereabouts, probably turloughmore, maybe Tommies or even st Thomas' have one last shot at winning tom callanan.
I can't see beyond Loughrea making it 3 in a row. Hanzy a big loss but Shane o brien is back fit and will prob spot into corner back nicely. Dylan shocks back from Oz and will prob slot into half back or half forward line., although he will have competition from Gavin maher.The introduction of forwards like jack shocks and Bobby Feeney to Vince Morgan, Darren shaughnessy, Anthony burns, Martin McManus (back fully fit), Jamie Ryan, tiernan Killeen etc I can't see any team coping with them. Roll on club champ 2026

Would be nice to see Loughrea 'lording it' for a change. Their excellent record for the last 25 years certainly never looked like it came easy. They're overdue a few freewheeling years, if now is their time. If they achieve 3 in a row, the comparisons to top sides of the past like Sarfields, Athenry, Portumna, Thomass will be inevitable, and hopefully not unflattering.

I agree with you there. They have to bridge that gap against ballygunner etc. they will have it all to do this year. I can see a few shocks along the way. Craughwell are building, clarinbridge are building but as the saying goes talent is not always enough. You need that bit of grit and doggedness. I would also say st Thomas' will have a bit say. I heard this year was the first year Thomas' had David burke for a league game. That's insane

Not the best game between Kinvara and Ahascaragh there in Loughrea this evening. Kinvara will be happy enough with how they competed in general but some bad wides let them down

Heard Kinvara left it behind them. You really are in a group of death, not sure where the bookies are getting their odds from.

Jeez lucky Loughrea had all those options. Would have been beaten by 20 without them. This Loughrea team isn't a patch on Thomas' in their pomp.

They are not a patch on St Thomas`s and have a long way to go to even be in the same breath as them or Potumna in the 2005 - 2015.

Yes I would say they will be very disappointed. Whelan and other left a fair few wide of the post and the keeper was turned over for a goal. Based on the performance, they should feel confident enough against Portumna and have a crack at Eyrecourt

If ever there is a statement "how the mighty have fallen " it could sum up Portumna!
I know it's early days in the Club Championship BUT, it already looks like Portumna will be in a Relegation battle to avoid dropping from Intermediate to 3rd tier Junior with most likely Mullagh, Killimor and Rahoon-Newcastle.
4 group bottom teams I expected to be these 4 Clubs.
Surely Rahoon-Newcastle or Killimor have to be certs for the drop? Mullagh would be best out of those 4 and will survive.
Could the once mighty Portumna drop?
They got hammered 12pts by the mighty men from Meelick-Eyrecourt, Ahasragh-Fohenagh will also hammer them and Kinvara should beat them too by a few points.

Yes it's possible but playing JC at center back for the first twenty minutes he got opened up. Scored the couple of goals near end to put some gloss on the scoreline. McLoughlin didn't start brought on after 20/25 mins don't know what's up there.
Yes I'd say relegation semifinal. Andy smith has his work cut out.

I know Portumna have been falling for a few years, but when JC retires from Club hurling they have absolutely nothing coming through.
If they get relegated to Junior it could set Portumna back years and it could be 15yrs before they get back upto Senior.

I don't buy this theory that falling to Junior impedes the route back to Senior. Why should it set a team back years? That's just cliche really. If your talent capacity for a spell drops you to Junior, it won't greatly delay the route back to senior, once a senior calibre roster emerges from underage at some point. Portumna are enthusiastic enough about their u13/u14 groups at the moment, according to a GBFM report I heard recently. That's not to say they'll be senior in 10 years time, but it's not to say they won't be either. Either way, if they come with a senior calibre bunch at some point, they'll likely emerge from junior just as quickly as intermediate imo.

Portumna for years were bog standard team bouncing between Junior and Intermediate, then in '92 they won Intermediate with a nice young team and lost the '95 Senior Final. Went quite for a few years then Minor B winners '98 and Minor A runner up '99 Senior winners '03 and the rest is history.
Clarinbridge similar years ago completely unheard until they came with a nice group of young hurlers winning u14,u16,Minor, u21 Intermediate '94 and Senior '01.
Clarinbridge have maintained that consistency and grown from strength to strength at underage whereas Portumna are struggling to field good underage teams.
St.Thomas will rise again quicker than Portumna will because they already have good underage teams coming through.
I have said it before the East Galway Intermediate Clubs should be able to put a combined team enter the Senior Championship named East Galway.
They can still play with their respective Clubs for the Intermediate Championship

Exactly. A team will generally end up at a level where their talent at the time determines they should be.
If they develop some strong groups from underage, then they have a chance to progress again.
It often actually helps a young group coming through to graduate into Junior or Intermediate initially at adult level, rather than being thrown into senior.
Portumna were junior in the past for many years and intermediate for around a decade, before finally getting to senior in the early 90s. That's where their level was at the time. They're competing very well at U14 A, so if they keep that team together and a few more to add to it, they'll build again.

That Portumna underage group at u13 and u14 is very strong. Saw Johnny Kelly was doing some coaching with them. There'd be a good few sons of former players all in that one age group
