Last years results werent bad overall at u15 and u16. This years arent good. Im not too bothered about u14 results this year as we are fielding mixed teams. We had pretty mixed results at minor and u20, but only 2 bad defeats where we werent competitive all the same. Both to Galway one in each grade. Martin Fogarty did a.lot too. What you're seeing now is private companies starting to do.sessions like GameSense coaching. I've been to a few and they are OK but essentially a business making money from coaching. Although Paudi and Martin were in paid roles, I always felt that they brought wholesome passion wheras these coaching companies are hit and miss. Use youtube to find Paudi Butler sessions in Na Fianna if you're looking for a few ideas. Great stuff WEXILE (Wexford) - Posts: 519 - 30/07/2026 18:23:57 2688214 Link 0 |

Willie Maher is doing what Martin Fogarty did before, and Paudie Butler before him.

Elgransenor of course its possible that maybe noone has applied who they think is good enough, or theres been no interest. But have you seen any job advertisement for either position anywhere? Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 20384 - 31/07/2026 11:58:11 2688268 Link 0 |

What you are describing is stasis here when everything needs huge revamp. StoreysTash (Wexford) - Posts: 2147 - 31/07/2026 12:59:24 2688283 Link 0 |

Willie Maher's primary goal is to promote hurling in weak counties .. Wexford prob not seen as a 'weak' county but surely GAA can see that we are in trouble .. or do they see it that way? .. Is it only Wexford people that think we are a big strong hurling county that is underachieving when in reality people outside the county see us as a very mediocre

People outside the county think we should be doing better than we are. We are mediocre at the minute, whatever way you look at it. Willie Maher is one of the guest speakers at an event in New Ross on Thursday 27th August. Tom Dempsey, Michael Duignam and Ursula Jacob will be talking at it too. In fairness our new S and C coach seemed to do a decent job, there seemed to be alot less soft tissue injuries this year from the outside looking in. The job Declan Browne did and is needing filled is different. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 20384 - 31/07/2026 16:26:42 2688314 Link 0 |

Any Wexford people that think we're a big strong hurling county would obviously be wrong, although I don't think there's that many that would in fairness. Yes I can definitely attest to that last part from speaking to hurling folk from the successful counties. I know it's an unpopular opinion but our best hope of being any way successful in the next decade is by having a generational crop coming through all together.

There are very few counties who actually take hurling seriously so we are probably a "big" hurling county by default

The reality outside the county from the people I know from Munster counties and other counties is "what's going on with Wexford, yer gone way back" "Ye'll be Joe MacDonagh shortly" We're just viewed as an also ran basically and that's the reality Goreylad1985 (Wexford) - Posts: 63 - 31/07/2026 20:48:41 2688333 Link 0 |

Tbh, I'm not sure what the difference is really between being a strong hurling county that's under-achieving and a mediocre hurling county given how few actual hurling counties there are I don't think the opinion you state is unpopular at all, thinking our likeliest hope of being successful in the next decade is by consistently producing very good teams at underage level would be a much more unpopular opinion across the county IMO And if we're being honest, a "generational crop coming through all together" is the only real way we had any success in the last 20 years if we're talking about the 2013-2015 U21 sides ElGranSenor (Wexford) - Posts: 1464 - 01/08/2026 12:10:00 2688373 Link 0 |

All the above statements ( opinions ) are unfortunately factual. Our lack of success is everywhere. We haven't even reached a leinster final at intercounty level for a long time now. We are seen by other counties as massive underachievers. The footballers did gain promotion to division 2 Which was no mean achievement but failed badly in the championship and Tailtean cup last year and this year. Maybe with Dereck Mc Grath on board we will become more competive but that remains to be seen. Magpie2 (Wexford) - Posts: 729 - 01/08/2026 15:39:34 2688393 Link 1 |

I don't get the line of thinking that says we've gone way back, the Davy years were really an aberration and how bad we've been in recent seasons isn't that far below what we've been for the most part of the last 40-45 years although the last few years have been as bad as we've ever been (Bonnar years were as bad, might've been even worse tbh) ElGranSenor (Wexford) - Posts: 1464 - 01/08/2026 18:25:39 2688406 Link 0 |

Excellent summary of our standing as a hurling county unfortunately.

I think the big difference is we've had an awful lot more reasons to be hopeful in the past. Tony Dempsey John conran John meyler Liam dunne Davy Each of those eras felt as if we were building towards something big. The last two years have felt like we're going nowhere fast. We haven't done anything worth being hopeful about at any level since Rossi was over the 20s and even that was only losing close finals. What do you mean by a long time? The position we've been in most consistently in the round robin era is 3rd. How are you measuring national ranking? A quarter final is top 6 so you can't really be lower than 6th nationally if you finish 3rd in Leinster. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 4628 - 01/08/2026 21:17:44 2688416 Link 0 |
