Looking at videos of referee been beaten up in Clare last night at underage match between Lissycasey & Kilrush who would want to be a referee? There's a big shortage in many counties , there should be a campaign to attract more young referees/ ex players by paying them more and looking after them better with gear , tickets etc . As it stands some referees are reffing a huge amount of games which is unfair and inadvertently putting themselves in the way of drama . Some clubs in Limerick have the same referee from a neighbouring club doing all their matchs which can put him under pressure to give them everything or the opposite but the home team and the away team will read it to suit their narrative which can lead to trouble after they training for 6 months .
Clare County Board need to man up on that one. Offending club should be banned from championship for 2 years. Guy who hit the ref should get a 4 year ban.
No fines - just proper bans.
To be honest, this stuff is led from the top.
Kerry and Dublin won fair and square at the weekend and you had two conservative managers blaming the ref for matches they didnt go after fully.
Both managers are known for conservative play and end up blaming the ref becuase they their teams were outscored in a shootout.
Both of those managers should be fined or suspended for that sort of wingeing too. It starts with intercounty managers not showing respect and finishes with a deranged lunatic beating up a ref in an underage club match.
The GAA dont help themselves - its very rare for a ref to be stood down.
Even reffing U8 go games, there are plenty of complaints to the ref from the sideline. Last year we had a parent go after a ref at U8's.
Association needs to decide - protect the refs or lose good refs.

I dont know much about what happened but banning kids and adults that weren't involved solves nothing and helps noone. Those involved will be dealt with in the courts where appropriate and by the Association. There is no need to bring people who weren't even there into it.

I think fining the clubs is the way to deal with this poison in the game. Substantial fines. It wouldn't take long for the people that give sponsorship or those that fundraise to call a halt. This poison is as much part of the culture now as all the positive aspects. Trying to raise money is torturous and never-ending. Watching it being handed over because of some wannabe hard man would force the clubs to nip it in the bud.

There is no way that the adult and kid who were on top of that ref on the ground haven't had some sort of previous issue at another match. These things are never once off's - there is obviously an attitude and behavioural problem that has been tolerated. The team coaches and likely clubs children's officer have likely been allowing this fella away with bad behaviour for years.

Some good points there. My issue is really with the GAA hierarchy. In the last number of weeks we have seen live on our TV screens mentors/managers/ selectors/ subs/non-playing staff etc. from intercounty teams coming on to the pitch and bar a couple of black cards and one red no punishment has been handed down to anyone one else. Should we not have had a full video review of these incursions and anyone who shouldn't have been on the pitch should be banned and county boards hit with massive fines for not controlling the people who represent them. Did we see the Gardai involved when the Kerry player assaulted the Donegal player because that is what a punch to the face is, No! He got a week or two ban and there he is walking around Croke Park last Saturday. Young lads who witness these scenes will think its fine to do the same when they see their stars doing it! Wake up Mr Burns and do something about it!
