If history only remembers winners, why do Mayo get so slagged off for losing finals?

Admin can we get confirmation of this? I'm against multiple users but there is a narrative out there that every WUM is now really from mayo….its coming from two counties in particular.

I have a soft spot for both Galway and mayo tbh and for me Galway built brilliantly underage in the end of the 2010s when mayo seniors where flying, but for me Galway are stagnating a wee bit still relying on Conroy and hoping for comer and Walsh to come in fit, Galway have some super players especially in the middle 8 and roles seem to be slightly reversed as Galway are ahead but mayo are building nicely at underage now, and mayo for all the naysayers are not a kick in the hotel away from any team on there day, I feel they need to play the younger players sooner and stop relying on the older heads, I fully expect it to be a Galway v mayo final in connaght and I look forward to it. If I'd to back a winner now, I'd edge slightly at mayo but no result would suprise me Liftball (Armagh) - Posts: 61 - 27/03/2026 16:50:48 2663519 Link 0 |

I have a soft spot for Armagh. Great supporters. Was delighted for ye in 24. Think ye will be at the business end and contenders this year .

Galway also have 9 all Ireland wins though. Mayo have 3. Ultimately that's what both are measuring each other against. Your previous comment was saying there's nothing between Galway, Mayo and Roscommon. I get you may be getting caught up in a bit of hype, running up the score on Monaghan and a Roscommon B team, but that still seems a bit optimistic at this point? Mayo haven't made a quarter final since 2023. Even the last two quarter finals they made, they were absolutely hockeyed out the gate. Galway have been in two finals in that time. Even last year, a year where Galway barely played well once, they still won Connacht and were a point away from a semi final. Mayo limped through (and out) of Connacht and got knocked out at the first all Ireland stage. They haven't won a Connacht in a long time Roscommon have had a great league and have huge promises but got hammered by a makeshift Galway team in Connacht last year and like Mayo, haven't made a semi final in a long time. So again , they'll have to make a big jump to get to the point you're suggesting Both of those teams years will be geared around stopping Galway winning 5 in a row. Galway's sights, rightly or wrongly, will be set upon making quarter and semi finals PressureKick (UK) - Posts: 362 - 28/03/2026 20:26:58 2663645 Link 1 |

You are discounting Mayo in comparison to Galway but then you compare Mayo and Roscommon….The rossies have not won a championship game in Croke Park since 1980! Come on man .

This is the original point I'm referring to 'The reality under the new rules is you cant call who will win between Roscommon, Galway or Mayo on a given day. The problem for all three is they are not in the top bracket of teams" That suggests that all 3 counties are relatively equal standing into 2026. And can completely ignores the recent history of each team. It's completely normal to treat each county in the context of that comment Nothing personal but you try to present yourself as a mature poster amidst the sea of childish mayhem that is your local counterparts. However the veneer of abjectivity slips quite markedly at times PressureKick (UK) - Posts: 362 - 28/03/2026 21:58:21 2663658 Link 1 |

It's all swings and roundabouts. Mayo are starting out under a new management team with new players. Nobody in Mayo thinks we will win an all Ireland this year or next. What we are looking for is progress. Some tipped us for relegation so league was a massive success. A Connacht title win and a good showing after that would be a great year in my opinion. Won't be easy but it's achievable.

Anyone at the u20 game last night have any report on what they seen? Over on the rossie forum they are saying they were the better team 1st half and missed a load….? How did our lads do, Kobe, Bernie etc? Any new names to watch out for? yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 12007 - 02/04/2026 12:41:57 2664396 Link 0 |

They'd massive domination at midfield for periods, especially in that 1st half. Left a fair bit behind them (probably 1-5 or so off the top of my head, possibly a little more), but we probably left as much behind (2 or 3-3) so swings and roundabouts there. Carthy and Heneghan probably their two standouts around the middle and Curran inside causing some real headaches (he only got the 1 from play so outscored by Casey, Kilcline & Carthy but he was the one scaring us at times). A really solid side who'll still have a big say in how the rest of the Championship pans out. Lynch with a lovely performance for our lads. When we looked up against it against the wind in the 2nd half he was the one that was really driving us forward with intent. DB did DB things (a really sweet 2 pointer from play and a sideline free you'd tip your cap to any senior nailing) scoring 0-1-4 without getting near top gear. Kobe QB'd a fair amount of the play and Deane burying the 2 goals solid performances too, with Holmes and Moyles making a huge impact on restarts for the 3rd quarter burst that got us over the line. Still a lot to work on, restarts & locking down threats the main ones... but nothing especially new there for us at any grade. A few I might have expected pushing for a 1st 15 or getting close (say McGreal, Coghill, Noonan, Butler, Thornton & Carey) yet to see much time or even making a 24, so hopefully a bit of competition coming from those as things progress and some of the injuries clear up. Roscommon not leading at half time with the amount of possession we had proved costly. It's a whiie since I attended a match whereby the wind disappeared 2nd half. The 15 minute period 2nd half where Mayo got hands on ball and outscored us 1-6 to no score was a telling difference. Your captain had a huge influence during that patch. The importance of having a good and consistent long range free takers was very much on show. 0-7 scored for Mayo in that manner while we had 3 two pointer frees (scored one) and two 45s (both missed) our best outfield range free takers are out injured and strangely our keeper hasn't taken any in this U20 campaign when he's scoring well with his senior club. With the pick of three U17 Connacht winning teams it will surely be a disappointment if you don't win this Connacht U20 title but you'll need to improve on your performances so far to beat Galway. We have lots to improve on to stand a chance of winning a semi-final if we reach it. The_analyser (Roscommon) - Posts: 4325 - 03/04/2026 12:59:18 2664574 Link 0 |

Mayo didn't win the Connacht minor championship last year, although we did make an AI semi final.
