Honest question. Did Aughawillan not have a famous import for some of their wins in the 80's and 90's or what was the connection there?

you just backed up the argument there, they didn't get to a final before without the Jones's and now have, you don't have to be Einstein to work it out. and when the Jones's leave Leitrim will go back to a quarter/semi final team they have been and no more.

Declan Darcy had grand parents and parents from Aughawillan to be fair. straightred (Leitrim) - Posts: 67 - 17/10/2025 13:56:06 2640403 Link 2 |
Know very little about Leitrim Gaels but adding 3 players of intercounty standard is a big addition for any club. Any word who Leitrim play in Connacht? Had heard recently that Kevin Johnson is involved which would be a major coup for them if true. Tribesmen121 (Galway) - Posts: 7 - 17/10/2025 15:51:23 2640431 Link 0 |
From recollection Declan Darcy (and his brother whose name escaped me) always played club football in Aughawillan including underage and underage county with Leitrim . He never played in Dublin (club or county) until his transfer there in late 1990s.

Mohill seem to be on the way down after a great decade and Carrick had a disaster of a season so it was all set up for Fenagh or LG to get to the final. LG could have gotten to a final without the 3 Jones. Having them made them favourites from the outset. I think saying they'd be nowhere near the final without them is a bit much. However I would fancy SOH to win on Sunday if they weren't there.

Disingenuous to say they've been knocking on the door. They've had a decent if limited team the last few years, a golden generation in Leitrim Gaels but not a senior championship winning team. The addition of three county footballers would turn most clubs into contenders. I think if all three lads lived in the village, you'd have to congratulate them, but the circumstances are very iffy. Only one of them lives in Leitrim Village. They've really struck gold. LeitrimDaddy (Leitrim) - Posts: 84 - 18/10/2025 02:59:26 2640475 Link 0 |
There isn't a club in the county that would turn down three players of the quality of the Jones'. If any club had a problem they should have raised it with the county board but as you know, none did. I wish LG well and hope they take home the Fenagh Cup on Sunday. I think SOH will beat them but would like to see LG win.

Yes Declan played with Aughwillan and Leitrim right up Kenneth his Brother much less but played midfield and won a Dublin championship with St Bridgids. He may have played Under 21 for Leitrim. Neither player should have been eligible to play with Aughwillan but there father Frank was a great Leitrim Gael and transported them weekly to training and matches. Born in Drumshanbo John Owens won a championship with Allen Gaels and played with Leitrim in PJ Carroll's time. He had spent most his life living in Tipperary. I think it was a questionable enough connection but he was a good addition to the county set up so there wasn't much of push back. Colin McGlynn from Kiltubrid was also on that Allen Gaels championship winning team. There was very little or no push back from other clubs at the time. Despite the fact that they contributed significantly to the winning of county titles. (But there was no social media in the nineties). The players above also all represented Leitrim with distinction. Perhaps if the jones name started to appear on Leitrim team sheets it would ease the pain for those complaining about there influence. I for one wish Leitrim Gaels and the Jones brothers the very best. I think it would be great to see a new name on the Fenagh Cup. The club have come along way in a short few years. St Osnatts who were set up at the same time have folded. So should Leitrim Gaels be crowned new county champions there should be no asterisk as what is happening now has happened before and will happen again. Here's hoping for a fantastic County final best of luck to both teams and the officials. Leitrim Abu Backheel (Leitrim) - Posts: 220 - 18/10/2025 14:12:35 2640503 Link 0 |
Parallels being drawn here aren't the same, goes against the ethos of the club model, all 3 should have been lining out for their club in the fermanagh final this evening, connection to leitrim village is tentative at best

Interesting about Colin McGlynn, I vaguely remember him as a Leitrim footballer, and a good one too, but just as playing for St Bridgets, didn't realise he was from kiltubrid but went to Allen Gaels. gaelsboy (Leitrim) - Posts: 686 - 18/10/2025 22:46:50 2640580 Link 0 |
Plenty of movement between clubs back in the days when clubs were almost about to fold or permanently in junior, we are talking the mid part of the last century if not later and then you have Leitrim people who have made their homes elsewhere and had children there...as an example what might have been in the early 90s for the county team with Colm O'Rourke of Aughavas and John and Des Newton of Annaduff. There'd be a few more Connacht titles in the bag I think. Throw in Kevin Moran of Aughnasheelin...who needs Manchester United when you have Aughnasheelin. alalalalalum (USA) - Posts: 44 - 19/10/2025 12:23:12 2640616 Link 1 |
Dessie Bohan (Kiltubrid) and Gerry Butler (Eslin) went to Fenagh sometime in the 90s, Mark Beirne from Cloone transferred to Annaduff in more recent years. Probably more than that too.

Just logged on to stream county final. €20 for the match I will stick it on the radio. And keep an eye on other matches on telly. Would have paid up to 15 but feels like county board putting the hand in. Backheel (Leitrim) - Posts: 220 - 19/10/2025 14:45:13 2640638 Link 1 |
Just watching the county final here…game hasn't really got going yet. The colour of the LG jerseys struck me as a bit odd…purple and green, easy knowing they're a relatively new club, but how did they come up with that combination back in 1997? Have a read of this poster. The colours go back long before 97. Many Leitrim locals would have been involved with Sheemore Gaels, where I would deduce the colours came from https://www.leitrimobserver.ie/news/home/692844/when-sheemore-gaels-ruled-supreme-in-leitrim-football.html LeitrimManiac2000 (Dublin) - Posts: 4 - 19/10/2025 16:25:06 2640644 Link 0 |
Is this game been played on the moon? Shannon side fm constantly dropping . I was initially fully in agreement with you. Put your €20 towards entrance fees for the league games in February. But this is painful at times Mugatay (Leitrim) - Posts: 172 - 19/10/2025 16:40:40 2640646 Link 0 |
