Who are these so called "Big Guns" from Senior B? You're giving out about the new Premier junior and Reeves Cup when Senior B was the biggest cod of a competition of them all..... Just so the so called "traditional teams" could keep their Senior Status.

I've a novel solution for these second teams looking to move up the grades, enter a football team. They can have two senior teams then if they like.

Alot of those Senior teams earned that status the hard way by winning the Intermediate. It wasn't their fault that the Hurling Board increased the number of Senior teams to 24. Remember when there was no relegation from Senior for a few years and the two Intermediate teams were promoted. We now have a situation where good hard working Clubs who won Intermediate the hard way and were not relegated from Senior have lost their Senior status because the Hurling Board cocked it up by increased the number of Senior teams. My heart goes out to those wonderful traditional Clubs who have soldiered through thick and thin for Galway hurling down through the years. katser (Galway) - Posts: 2720 - 14/09/2025 12:34:12 2636073 Link 1 |
Would you stop loads of teams have soldiered on for plenty of years in intermediate and junior. There are 8 intermediate teams that have also been affected. You are more worried about second teams from stronger clubs.

Katser won't like that suggestion. I'd say he has predicted Moycullen to lose every game in the last 6 years.

You're giving out about our lack of success at Junior All-Ireland level, when the main reason for it has been the fact that we've had 24 senior teams. But you then want them to retain that number. The previous hurling board cocked up by letting it become so bloated, and the current one is fixing the issue. We'll have a much better structure next year, and those teams who were Senior B this year should be relishing a crack at the Intermediate championship. They might even have a shot at going further in the All-Ireland series as well, now that they'll be our 17th best team instead of the 25th. Is Moycullen the only club in Galway to have senior football and senior hurling?

Yes, but technically they're separate clubs. Moycullen hurling is it's own club. Demographics and underage success would suggest Oranmore/Maree should be senior in both soon, but nothing is ever handed to you. They're in Intermediate football relegation this year, which ouldn't have been predicted by many at the start of the year. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2535 - 15/09/2025 11:29:29 2636222 Link 1 |
I think that you are correct about Moycullen technically but do they not share the same facilities and jersey colours, I agree regards Oranmore Maree . Claregalway /Carnmore are somewhat in the same fashion but each have separate facilities in different locations and wear differing colours Claregalway also seems to cover the Turloughmor hurling area as well. Kiltormer are the only other club who had duel senior teams at the same time that I can recall, their hurling team was the dominant force at the time and the football side were competitive, others like Athenry come close at one time. There was always a bit of crossover hurlers playing football with another club and vice a versa.

A reason for lack of Junior All Ireland success is putting Clubs forward to represent Galway who can't even win the Junior A or beat traditional Clubs 2nd team. This Premier Junior with no relegation is going to leave alot of Clubs in a timeworp, not good enough to win the competition but safe from humiliation by not being relegated to to Reeves Cup or 5th tier Junior A. That Reeves Cup with Clubs 2nd teams will be alot more entertaining and exciting than that boring Premier Junior competition. There should be promotion for Reeves Cup winners to Premier Junior and relegation from Premier Junior to Reeves Cup. katser (Galway) - Posts: 2720 - 15/09/2025 16:09:52 2636300 Link 1 |
I think you'll find that Croke Park had a lot to do with this 'fixing of the bloated structure' though. It's likely we'd still have 24 in senior otherwise I think the projected structure for next year is fine but I think individual CB's should be able to choose how many go up or down in a given season and not have that dictated to them by CP We should have the option to have more than 1up/1down if we wanted it But it's a minor thing at this stage. Wonder if they'll seed intermediate next year or not, I imagine the 4 SF teams will be separated. I'd separate it so that it's 2 senior b and 2 intermediate in each group. Doubt this'll happen though Stool Pigeon (Galway) - Posts: 960 - 15/09/2025 16:25:32 2636305 Link 3 |
Nonsense. First team clubs have won Junior A five times in the last decade or so, and they didn't fare any better those years than they did when the Junior 1 winners represented Galway. The bottom line is our Junior representatives were at best our 41st ranked team under the current structure. This was compared to the likes of Kilkenny sending their 25th ranked team. Whether we sent our 41st or 44th best team, it wasn't making a blind bit of difference. Our record at Intermediate has also been very poor. Again due to the disparity in ranking (25th versus 13th), which is again large due to the number of Senior clubs we had, but not quite as large as the difference at Junior. Yes, the dictat came from HQ. The current board are implementing it though in a way which I think makes a lot of sense. It's also worth noting that the new structure came from a proposal from a club, which was amended slightly and sent for a vote to all hurling clubs.

Loughrea after winning U14 A county cup. Playing Oranmore in U20A final replay and also Oranmore in Minor semi final. Future looks bright for them along with the likes of Oranmore and Athenry. Just showing that the country clubs are struggling in comparison to the bigger towns. Galway2k17 (Galway) - Posts: 4 - 16/09/2025 08:41:36 2636372 Link 0 |
Ah the up and coming team for the last decade who are only a matter of time away from winning senior? Give the restructure a chance and don't knock it I for one look forward to it I think the 8 in senior B was useless and clubs just having on the their status. A senior B club whilst would have loved to stay senior in side they would relish an intermediate title and a crack at an all Ireland.

In discussing duel clubs or club areas I omitted Ballinasloe who competed as Ballinasloe and St Grellans in hurling and football for many years in the past.I look forward to learning of more.
