Can't believe what I am hearing about the 6 in a row Dublin team. Regardless of the standard of the rest of the country there is a reason why 6 in a row has not been done before, an exceptional outfit, the best of all time imo. ahsure. (Galway) - Posts: 1719 - 08/07/2025 16:10:32 2624425 Link 3 |
Yeah they were unreal - crazy saying they only won due to lack of competitive teams - they consistantly blew fantastic teams out of it

Yes and now as the years go by some people think it was six in a row Dublin team that blew teams away in All Ireland finals.

2015 final was there to be won also. As was the 2016 All Ireland semi final, Dublin won the match with two points deep into added time. Kerry I bet will have much regrets about those games same with the 2019 final when they had the extra man.

Fine line between masters of winning finals by narrow a margin and getting the rub of the green to do so. Starting with the 2011 final that ended their "famine" A clear foul on Kerry player that would have been scorable free just before Cluxton scored that winner. Was it drawn final with Mayo that a Dublin player with seconds to go picked the ball off the ground which would have given Mayo a tap over free to win it? Four Senior All Ireland football titles in 60 years all from Galway (65,66,98,01) not enough from Connacht teams as your main point suggests. I wonder why you discarded "64" from your tally?

Get a grip Jim, Mayo 2021 weren't 'much better' than current Galway. You often deliver peculiarly accurate assessments, but even you'd admit that you dropped your guard with that one.

Kerry never really fired a shot in 2015. It was poor game in poor conditions and Dublin kept the gap til the end. Kerry never came close to looking like scoring the goal they needed. Dublin had their measure. They had enough chances to do it. I could argue that we could have beaten Kilkenny in the 2012 and 2015 finals, but the reality is we weren't good enough when it mattered. In 2019 Kerry got the breaks. Their goal came from a poor Dublin mistake and that ignited their challenge. Yet, even with the extra man Dublin managed to turn them over numerous times at the end to work an equaliser. Only for Dublin's wastefulness at the end, they would have actually won the first day. I think they had the last 4 shots of the match, only scoring 1. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2422 - 09/07/2025 10:27:04 2624564 Link 0 |
You're over egging it there with fantastic teams. A poor enough Kerry team by their standards and a Mayo team who had amble opportunities to beat Dublin but couldn't. Donegal were done the year before Dublin won their first of the 6 in a row, it was a poor era. TheBishop (Galway) - Posts: 296 - 09/07/2025 10:51:22 2624570 Link 0 |

Its a poor return from Connacht. Mayo are paralysed by their history of final losses now and you wouldnt fancy them in any future final no matter who its against with 1951 like a millstone around their necks. Roscommon do their best and a new manager will freshen them up. As for us the jury is out and we may come back stronger next year as we did in 24 after the 22 loss but time will tell. Because it would be 61 years then. Endgame might be repeating the recent Irish Examiner headline "two All-Irelands won in 60 years the West asleep" it's actually 4 in 60 years.

You do realise that you lot have lost more finals then us ? 13 to our 11 . So if your not going to fancy Mayo any final because of that I'd definetly not fancy you lot . Once we get one though there will be no stopping us. Also you have an ageing team. At least we have lots of young talent coming up. S1234 (Mayo) - Posts: 275 - 09/07/2025 18:58:19 2624705 Link 0 |
I suppose the difference is looking at the other side of the column. 3 times as many titles, and still 3rd (a very distant 3rd) in the roll of honour. The number of wins and percentage of wins would be far greater on Galway's side than Mayo's. Either way, it's like two bald men fighting over a comb at the moment, until we start to win some All-Irelands. As was mentioned, Connacht teams have a very poor record in finals. I'd love to see Mayo win an All-Ireland. I'm not sure about the no-stopping you though. Connacht teams are well adept at stopping themselves at times and have plenty experience shooting themselves in the foot. WanPintWin (Galway) - Posts: 2422 - 09/07/2025 20:10:45 2624712 Link 0 |
Didn't see that Examiner headline analyser. Galway did 3 in a row 1964-1966 and Connacht's next All Ireland win was Galway in 1998 and 2001 and nothing since. It's a poor record for our province and we know that as Connacht men and Roscommon men. As I said, it's hard to see where Connacht's next All Ireland comes from. Roscommon have gone backwards although a new Manager should help. Mayo don't have the quality of players they had 2012-2017 when they came so close in 4 All Ireland finals and it's hard to see Galway getting a better chance than last year.

As per Paddy Power, outright winner odds for the club championship. WonTon5 (Galway) - Posts: 43 - 09/07/2025 23:14:41 2624742 Link 0 |
2021 they weren't as good as 13-17 but they beat the 6 in a row dubs so still an excellent team and yes much better all round than the current Galway team. The ones that need to get a grip are the ones claiming Armagh were harder to beat last year than the dubs were in some of those finals.
