I've watched a good bit of club hurling in Cork, I like watching it because players don't seem to have the flair coached out of them to the same degree as other counties. But the reason this team is having the success it is is down to a particularly big/tall group of players coming at the same time, who are being coached in unCorklike skills like the dark arts, the importance of physicality, and the importance of having structure to their play. Plenty of Cork teams over the last 20 years had Corkness in abundance, flair and skill and confidence, but fell short because they weren't able to do the basics of modern intercounty hurling well. And weren't big enough or hard enough. Bill Cooper was for years the only lad that seemed to have that last characteristic in his make up for example. Basically they might have a period of success coming despite the way Cork hurling is, not because of it. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 16508 - 07/07/2025 10:20:58 2624064 Link 0 |
Who can stop Cork? Tipp can Will Tipp stop Cork? Maybe Yadse (Limerick) - Posts: 160 - 07/07/2025 14:44:53 2624153 Link 1 |
Agreed. And remember the past couple of years there has been an element of over physicality and ill discipline by this Cork team with damaging red cards. Even this year with the red card in Ennis They seemed to be overcompensating for past "softness" (real or imagined) They now seem to have gotten the balance right and are a big, hard, physical team who play on the edge but usually stay on the right side of the refs (Tipp have two red cards this championship, but both have been by the same player so dont know if thats just an individual thing) Yadse (Limerick) - Posts: 160 - 07/07/2025 16:29:02 2624193 Link 0 |
Tipps 2 reds were both a little unlucky. The 1st goes on in many games before throw in. Probably wouldn't have happened against previous Cork teams as the victim wouldn't have gone down as if he was shot. 2nd yellow was marginal.

To be fair to the Tipp player, he's a young lad learning his trade at senior level who's probably just a little too enthusiastic. We had the same in Wexford with Cian Byrne. Didn't think there was much in either of them to be perfectly honest, other than the slap on the goalkeepers hand was silly when he was on a yellow. You might get aware with that in the parish on a Wednesday evening, but not in an all Ireland semi final. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3820 - 08/07/2025 08:04:22 2624286 Link 0 |

Good man Viking! Another thinly veiled 'snipe at Cork' post. You just can't help yourself…

Tipp will be doing exceptionally well to keep close to Cork in the final. Fionn (Dublin) - Posts: 4448 - 08/07/2025 12:22:56 2624354 Link 0 |
That's not a snipe at all. It's acknowledging the fact that Cork are up to date now with what AI winners have been at the last good few years. Hopefully we will wake up to that too sometime soon.

I think you've missed his point completely.
