68k+ at Tipp and Galway. That's an incredible crowd for a semi final. You'd usually require Cork hurlers or Dublin Footballers to have a population center that could bring numbers like that. Went myself as did many more neutrals - show's people appreciate good hurling. I hope when TG4 look back on this epic rivalry in Laochra Gael I hope Galway will have their All Ireland. 190k in croker over a bumper weekend. Massive turnouts, especially for the hurling. They are expecting the stands to sell out for waterford vs cork. You'd imagine both counties would bring a good crowd to the hill aswell. I can see upwards of 75k for this semi which would be huge. Hopefully Mayo v Kerry will be 60k+ and the other 3 games remaining in the championship will all be sellouts. Great year for the GAA. I think the difference last Sunday was the Galway support. In 2016 there was 58k at the semi final between Tipp and Galway probably split 50 50. Last year there was 54k at the semi final with Tipp definitely having more support. Last Sunday I thought we had more support maybe 55%. More football people in Galway tend to follow the hurlers than the reverse if the other code is going well (mid fifties, most of the the sixties and 1998 to 2001 notable exceptions when our footballers were top of the pile). Probably because hurling is seen as a better game by marginal type fans and this has bigger impact in dual counties like Cork and Galway than one code counties like Mayo, Kilkenny, Kerry and most northern counties. You are right about Cork hurlers. They generate huge support when going well. I remember them getting big support until the tail end of the last great Cork team 2008ish. In the semi final with us in 2012 (after we beat Kilkenny well in the Leinster final) the attendance was onky 41k and we had good support after the Kilkenny win. Massive crowd in the hurling today. Their attendances are up hugely on last year. A great championship too. Hurling attendances have really recovered and then some since the damage the kilkenny dominance did. Hopefully more teams outside the traditional big 3 win it like they will this year. You just can't beat the entertainment these lads have been giving us the last few years. And Dublin winning leinster a few years back was great too. Thurles is not an easily accessible venue for most people living in Galway. They have to travel to Limerick first and then across, or else have to travel the bad roads and come via the bridge in Portumna.
