I was sitting on a train travelling to the Mayo Kerry match in 2014 in Croke Park and there was 2 men from Leitrim heading to the game supporting Mayo, they said they go to every Mayo game, fair play to them, I like to see people from neutral counties attending games, shows the GAA is belong to everybody

Pure exaggeration It's Westmeath not Millwall you are on about. It's a wonder it's safe for you to coach in Westmeath when people hear you are from the dreaded Meath. Do you get police protection or what ?

good post here , espically as we were talking about the rivalry with meath and cavan, some meath people are not convinced about it at all. as one poster says here if you have to educate one side that this isa dearby game and rivalry then its probarbly not a true rivalry. most meath people cant understand why cavan peeople would like to beat an average meath team over anyone else dickie10 (UK) - Posts: 834 - 10/02/2018 11:21:43 2075380 Link 1 |

Clare v Galway. Different provinces I presume make it fairly tame. PeggyShippen (Limerick) - Posts: 300 - 10/02/2018 18:51:12 2075460 Link 0 |
Carlow kildare, no rivalry there, infact many of us would follow Kildare once Carlow exit the championship Barrowsider (Carlow) - Posts: 1711 - 10/02/2018 19:20:22 2075469 Link 2 |
I presume your talking hurling. If Galway and Clare met more often the rivalry would be huge and no doubt the different provinces is the reason for the lack of games. But ask anyone from Galway what it feels like to come to Ennis for a big match and theyll know all about rivalry.

Leitrim and Donegal - zero rivalry leitrim4sam (Leitrim) - Posts: 699 - 10/02/2018 20:13:11 2075489 Link 0 |
Would feel much the same, would always cheer Sligo on against external opposition, and it was great to see them win Connacht back in 2007. Ditto for Leitrim. Likewise, even though it's a fairly fiery rivalry on the pitch, I respect what past Galway sides have achieved and would support their footballers outside the province, and their hurlers generally. Roscommon on the other hand... I wouldn't cheer them on if they were playing Glasgow Rangers. I honestly dread the day that they finally beat us again in a senior championship fixture. People in West Offaly have a rivalry with Roscommon. Galway borders Offaly near Banagher and Lusmagh along the Shannon.

Thanks Gleebo.! There was me cheering for Mayo against the Dubs in the last two All-Ireland finals.Seems with you it's a bit like what John Wayne said in Chisum. We may be neighbours but we don't have to be neighbourly.

I used to support the Sheep Stealers in their All-Ireland games (when I was young and impressionable), til I saw how deep the bitterness runs for some people over the border. The lovely welcoming party that some people of West Roscommon threw for MO registered cars following our 2016 All-Ireland loss probably didn't help much in that regard. It's just a hardened thing now and is unlikely to change. Respect is a two-way street, after all. There are always honourable exceptions amongst any collective, of course. I love the Rossies but I'm weird. From Ballyhaunis where a good few quality footballers from went/go to school. Love the craic and banter with them but I know many who dislike them. Used to hate leaving matches after the great Roscommon team of the 70s used to beat us, often! Learned to admire that great team later. I'd prefer to beat Galway.

Yeah how many All Ireland have they coughed up at this stage...they should get over their obsession with Roscommon. It hurts kills Mayo folknthat they are in Galways shade when it comes to winning Sam and they'd all jump into the Atlantic if Roscommon ever got their hands on Sam before them...and the clock keeps ticking...keep believing Mayo...Keep believing!!!

Bit of a rivalry there in hurling but not a major one I don't think as they obviously don't have a long history of playing against each other in a provincial championship. That said if you are living near the border there it might be a different matter. I'm a good bit away from there. Marooned (Galway) - Posts: 2389 - 11/02/2018 04:28:17 2075619 Link 0 |
