Interesting debate on joe.ie gaa podcast re who is more "marquee" , Bernard Brogan or Cillian O'Connor. Thought be interesting to ask the HS troop their opinions. Personally I think COC is a fine player and a pretty dependant free taker but..... Not in Brogans league. But thats just me!! Brogan is better all round player .Cillian is just a fantastic free taker and an all round 7/10 forward but 9/10 free taker.Brogan is 9/10 all round forward. Personally i think his brother Diarmaid is a far better footballer from play.

Well I'm biased obviously but are you saying that people are actually debating this? No contest, the two footed gentleman all day long. Cillian is a decent footballer but there are those that have won 10 provincials, 3 AIs and 4 all-stars and there are those that have not. Cillian is young though so has time on his side but Bernard is a legend. Big gap to bridge for the Mayo lad. Joxer (Dublin) - Posts: 4745 - 12/08/2016 20:27:44 1900417 Link 1 |
Jaysus a serious post from you. Brogan every day.

cillian O'Conor is a very good footballer, would love to have him here in Kerry as we are badly missing a player like him. Bernard brogan is different class though, and will go down as one of the greats. He's a real big game player too, how many times has he been the difference for Dublin in big games! No contest at the moment, but O'Connor has time to improve I suppose. GeniusGerry (Kerry) - Posts: 2113 - 12/08/2016 21:01:50 1900428 Link 0 |

When it comes to big games, The ones that matter the most, Bernard Brogan well and truly destroys COC. Kerry 2013 and Mayo in the final that year to name just two, But Cork 2010 aswell. He is absolutely immense. He can maybe go through the motions during a lot of games, But rest assured if there is one player in a Dublin jersey over the years that you can put your life on playing out of his skin when it matters, Its Bernard. But COC is a super footballer too. waynoI (Dublin) - Posts: 13654 - 12/08/2016 22:09:35 1900450 Link 0 |
Not comparing like for like. Brogan doesn't take frees anymore. Brogan more important from play, Cillian more important from frees. Both vital to their teams in different ways.

This season neither, Dublin had a soft Leinster champ and Mayo haven't hit form at all this year so it's hard to choose, the 2 semis and maybe the final will show but it's still hard to mark a 2 footed player but based on last years drawn game Bernard didn't get anything v Chris Barrett, the only score he got from play while Barrett was on the pitch was when Barrett and another Mayo player swapped opponents and Bernard scored. When Barrett was taken off Bernard had a field day kicking points for fun. Mayo showed how important Cilllian was and is when he clashed heads with AOS v Kerry in Limerick, he wasn't himself after that, when Cillian plays poorly Mayo play poorly riverboys (Mayo) - Posts: 1389 - 12/08/2016 22:19:47 1900454 Link 1 |
Good post. Actually think COC is very underrated. Vital cog in Mayo team. Had a good game against Tyrone against a very good defence. BB has a poor game against us the last day. I can't wait to see his response the next day. When the chips are down he always delivers. He roasted O Shea in the league final. Probably Enright to pick him up next time. Right now I'd take Cillian. MesAmis (Dublin) - Posts: 13803 - 12/08/2016 22:34:00 1900464 Link 1 |
Cillian O'Connor a brilliant footballer but Brogan is different class even now. Cillian could reach that level some day though RoscoMan (Roscommon) - Posts: 80 - 12/08/2016 22:41:52 1900468 Link 0 |
Claw don't rise to the bait, just tell them Brogan's great and Dubs are unbeatable

Brogan is class but as a Mayo fan, I wouldn't swap Cillian for him. He's just too important to us. MayoDan (Mayo) - Posts: 458 - 12/08/2016 23:58:37 1900483 Link 0 |
Brogan but very unfair comparison. Cillian is only just gone 23...who was comparing brogan to a great at that age? Two different players anyway. Cillian an expert free taker who can improve from play. Brogan from play is lethal and already a legend. Cillian has another 10 years ahead of he stays injury free. yew_tree (Mayo) - Posts: 11587 - 13/08/2016 01:13:17 1900488 Link 0 |
He really bring nothing to HS do you. Brogan for me however Cillian could reach his level. The_Fridge (Tyrone) - Posts: 2093 - 13/08/2016 08:10:34 1900499 Link 0 |

Can I just clarify here, I am repeating a discussion from Joe.ie sports podcast. I didn't come up with the comparison, Wooly etc did. Liamwalkinstown (Dublin) - Posts: 8166 - 13/08/2016 10:04:50 1900519 Link 1 |
I think if you are looking at the two on this year alone I would pick Cillian. If you take Donegal game as example and this was not a once off either Bernard struggles to compete with top defenders these last couple years (dubs i know u'll highlight O Se last year but in fairness O Se is no longer in the same bracket as he was in his pomp). I dont think Cillian would get much change out of the top defenders either but he has that added skill and importance as freetaker. Over the years though your rarely going to get a player as good as BB an all time great. This man i dont think will be bypassed by some of todays top forwards including Cillian. He has/had that same quality as gooch/canavan where anything he touched was a score. To be fair to Cillian he has time on his side to turn into one of the greats but he's lacking the speed to be the serious threat Similar to the all time greats in my opinion.
