We often run down our game , sometimes justifiably , but it dawned on me How often I've sat in stands beside opposition fans , bit of banter the odd expletive or two and a shake of a hand or a nod with a begrudging good luck , then rub shoulders in a local watering hole , and the crack starts again , then there's the away trips , the overnights and crack with the locals,
I bring this up because you turn on the news this morning and see what's happening in Marseille, of course the scum are not real fans , but it doesn't half make me appreciate what we have , long may it remain , I've allways said the day we ever can't mix is the day I stop watching.

Luckily like rugby, cricket etc ours have always been games that attract genuine sports fans. Mind you I wouldn't get too complacent having witnessed first hand drunken idiots in a certain LOI soccer team colours misbehaving on the Dart out to Bray. We don't want those type latching onto GAA games

Aye, the day we lose that we lose everything the GAA is

In fairness to us, aside from a tiny minority that will raise their heads now and again, the Irish mentality is to go out and to enjoy sport for what it is.

Soccer, GAA, rugby we go out to have the craic and cheer on the men and women who sacrifice so much to represent us.

You only have to see the pictures coming from the Irish fans in France and contrast with what the English and Russians are up to

Truth is in nearly every Sport opposing can fans sit beside each other and mix together after games or contests. ,it's only soccer where violent cowardly gangs are allowed flourish.

Sections of Fans from league of lreland right through to every country in the world have ignorant idiots who get their adrenaline buzz from violent encounters with opposing countries gangs.
Organised on internet and played out in public where innocent fans get caught in it.
The game is a side show for these people.

English fans getting a taste of their own medicine by the russians..to me an element of english fans are nothing but a pack of drunken mouths..easy acting the big man in numbers .but looking at the russians chasing them in the stadium last night showed them up for what they really are ..louts in numbers..everywhere they go they cause trouble..great to see the irish fans living up to their great reputation and having the craic .no trouble..tbh in glad to see the russians kicking the crap out of them

It's cultural, anglo-saxon mentality and maybe boredom having to watch paint dry week in week out :D
Anyway hopefully the Russians destroy them a few times before it's all over, better still, send them home and ban them forever.
The Hill had a nasty element during the 70s.

True enough.

Was at the game yesterday and Meath and Louth fans behaved impeccably to be fair to them.

You will always get the odd one, we had one Louth guy near us, nothing serious just that all Meath people were this that and the other, so and sos etc, but 99.9 % of them were perfect and had good chat with them, and of course shook hands and wished them the best against Derry, sounder people you couldn't meet.

GAA fans are by and large excellent.Their will always be one or two clowns which are best ignored.
Players could do with learning some respect.
Dicgraceful sportsmanship in Mullingar where an Offaly player was goaded and abused twice after the game by the same Westmeath player. He got what he was looking for.

All depends on country and sport. You just have to look at basketball and plenty of other sports and European leagues etc. Brother was in Greece last summer with his GF and went to an Athens derby basketball game and there was flares/mental crowd trouble in the indoor arena. As he was in the away section they were held in the stadium/arena for an hour or two after the end of the game to stop crowd trouble.
The game is a kind of side show but its real important to them at same time.

I remember in 1997 a friend of our brought an english cousin to the Cavan/Kerry Semi Final the lad could not fathom why Dublin was not divided in two to allow segregation and to prevent rioting the poor lad was totally dumbfounded when we went for a drink and joined a few Cavan lads at the table and discussed the game, after a few pints the thick Kerry jokes started and mean Cavan replies were dished out - it was only then that it dawned on me how lucky we were and how typical Irish it was to turn to some stranger in the crowd shake his hand and wish him best of luck in the next round and safe journey home - very few counties do no not possess this genuine trait and I have often said you meet the best and most genuine Gaa fan on away days in January and March when the true die hard supporter makes the effort - I hope it lasts cos it is one tradition that shows the true worth of the gaa family and is an example of the true ethos of the organisation

Seriously? I would watch a right bit of NBA and the yanks would often have the fans mixed in through each other. Even in games that would be considered rival games there will always be fans mixed in through each other. Although there won't be that many from the travelling support, usually only clippers & Lakers games or Nets and Knicks. I've seen Celtics Lakers games where there are celtics jerseys in the crowd in LA and vice versa. I don't watch any of the european game but i have to say im surprised by this.
