Duffy aims axe at U21FC

U21 football/hurling the most enjoyable intercounty games at present. Getting rid of one and not the other? where is the sense in that. Think its a case of trying to look like he,s doing something about burnout, than actually addressing the issue.

The U21 grade is an important bridge between minor and senior level, this proposal would be a disaster.

Worst idea ever these fools that are running the gaa are running it to the ground most under 21 teams are the step before going senior intercounty if you do away with it it's the kiss of death for a lot of teams

Sigerson and Ryan Cup football is a full season in itself. It is absolute madness to ignore what is being demanded of young footballers in universities. The universities league is run off in the autumn term. These lads are forced to compete in the O Byrne/McKenna/McGrath cups or The FBD League. They then have to go on and play in The Sigerson Cup. All of this is done between January and March. Is it fair to demand this of these players? Is there a Christmas break for these lads?

The real problem is lack of joined up thinking. Earlier this year they moved adult to over 17 without putting in place a meaningful structure for the 17 year olds who are caught between minor and doing nothing. Personally I was in favour of the age change but inter couty minor should have moved with it. Now they are prposing to move inter county to 17 and leaving club at under 18.

Doesn't make sense.

Nail on the head. Not to mention Sigerson weekend, where the finalists have to play full-length championship matches on consecutive days.

Most of these proposals are pretty silly anyway, especially abolishing the junior and intermediate All-Ireland ccompetitions. Chances are they won't see the light of day.

P Duffy proposed to scrap the U21 football championship back in 2007 but was turned down. U21 is as popular as ever now with some of the best football seen at that grade I can't believe Duffy is back again trying to scrap it.

Duffys proposal are relating to the very elite players (50 or so) who are playing colleges, U21 and senior. They suffer burn out.

As DG of the GAA he should be trying to increase participation no remove games.

The obvious and simple solution is to limit the no of teams a player can play for and also the no of games per week.

NO player on a 2015 intercounty championship panel should be playing 2016 sigerson/trench - no exceptions

No player playing U21 intercounty in 2016 can play sigerson/trench football (or vise versa whichever)

NO player playing U21 intercounty or sigerson in 2016 can play or train with an intercounty senior team until after those championships are over.
NO player can play minor intercounty and U21 intercounty in same year.

Burnout problem solved.

I don't ever remember PD kicking a ball in his life back in the day around Scotstown. Now how's he an expert on burn out? I'd safely say he never played u21

Do you have to have played the game, or any game, at a certain level to know about it? Just because he may not have played for Scotstown doesn't make his points any less valid, even if he is going the wrong way about it.

Agree with Tirawley Baron. These proposals are a nonsense. Why does our sporting organisations have to be led by politicians rather than proper leaders?

Why is he proposing to get rid of the football championship but noit the hurling championship?

His proosal overall is ompletely daft. The u-21 championship is far more important than the Sigerson or Fitzgibbon cups which nobody apart from thoise participatin in the games have an interest in.
