Kilkenny's lack of football interest

As a fella from a die in the wool hurling area in a weaker county, my own view would be that its up to each individual county to do what they choose.

If the likes of Cavan and Kilkenny don't want to fund or facilitate an inter-county team in one code that is their and their club delegates business.

Now saying that, I think that they should have to take a hit as regards the funding they receive off the Central Council because of the fact they chose not to promote one of the GAA's main codes.

For example I think it would be deeply unfair for Cavan to get the same amount of central funding from the GAA as say Donegal, when the latter invests in an county hurling side and puts it forward for national competitions etc.

From a Kerry experience, I think it's also a bit of a missed opportunity not to try and invest in 'the less popular' code.

Kerry hurling has taken enormous strides in the past 8 years to a point where we will be taking on the might of Clare, Limerick etc in the National League come February.

This has all been achieved in the shadow of a period when the Kerry footballers have gone through one of the most successful periods in their history over the last decade or so.

Hurling folk down here are rightly giving enormous credit to the County Board for this. For decades Kerry hurling was in the doldrums, but the investment and resources have been put in place.

We have been the most consistent 'tier two' hurling county in Ireland over the past 5 years and now we are getting the chance in 2016 to see how big the gap is between us and the top 8 -10 sides in Ireland.

Please God the gap will continue to close and we get to see Kerry take its place in the Munster Championship over the next 5-10 years.
