I always laugh when i hear figures bandied about about what managers/Trainers are being "paid"
They spoke about Jimmy McGuinness was joining Celtic for £150k a year - There is very few Assistant managers in the premier league making that money so how McGuiness was getting that for a part time gig as performance consultant for a club with tiny financial clout compared to English clubs is highly unlikely.

I heard from a source close to a county board that their manager was getting 0.50c per mile to travel up from a southern county to training and the use of a car,Nothing else,I also heard he was on 40k a year there,The first is far more believable

People talk about all this money that managers are getting paid but the simple fact is that county boards and clubs do not have that kinda money to be paying managers under the counter.

A certain club manager on 1,000 a week is laughable

Rochford won't come cheap! keeping Buckley again not cheap either same with McEntee or Solan a full time S&C coach.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is the most expensive management team Mayo have ever put together and at time when their sponsors almost went out of business and the Mayo county board have a big debt with MacHale park.

The county board will be well able to afford Rochford. He's got a very short management CV so his wage demands can't be overly taxing.

The big question is if the county board will be able to finance the players demands in relation to training, diet and logistics.

Listen of course Mayo can afford it

They can afford to be millions in debt, and still spend €600,000 on one team over one season

Mayo are right up there as a top spending county - albeit on one senior team.

So obviously they are finding money from somewhere - and managing to keep pace with the interest rates on said loans

But it does smack of short term goals... and that may come to haunt them in the coming years

Millions have been spent on the Mayo senior footballers - with success still alluding them on the big stage

Having that sort of debt hanging over you, and focusing that sort of expenditure while in debt, may have other consequences with how game development is progressing in Mayo. There must be a lot of money going straight to the bank.

They've spent big to win an All Ireland, and I wonder if that could be at the detriment of setting up the proper structures to continually bring through players.

Only time will tell...

Accusations of managers being paid are 100% accurate. Anyone involved in the finance side of GAA clubs or counties is fully aware of this and the "going rates" for the various calibers of candidate.

Fan donations help jimbodub. Few wealthy Mayo men in have contributed to the team down the years. That will continue. The level of support we have around the world is unreal. 5,000 of us went to NY two years ago and I spoke to Colm O Rourke out there and he said he couldn't believe the amount of Mayo people out there who traveled and ex-pats, second/third generation living out there and supporting the team.

Kerry had a fundraiser out there last Jan and got over a million I believe. Counties that have suffered from mass immigration (especially those in the west) need to tap into this potential.

I don't believe jimbo has it right to be honest. We won a minor all Ireland in 2013, we made the semis again the following year and were beaten by, in fairness a great side. They had a bad year last year, but that wasn't down to lack of funding, and we all in the county know that. We are also contesting junior all Irelands regularly - where some big counties don't even enter a team, so our grass roots is better than most over the period where we have spent the most. Our u-21s haven't been going great, but then again we have won AI's at u21 in the recent past. If most other counties had these levels of success they would consider their grass roots to be excellent.

True we have a debt, but we are making repayments on it as agreed with all parties concerned. The spending on the intercounty team is coming from monies that are left after these repayments have been made, we aren't going into debt to finance the senior side, which is what jimbo seems to be suggesting.

If your so concerned perhaps you should make a motion to the Dublin county board suggesting they return some of their share of central council funds.

Dublin gets the same funding as Connaught combined. If Dublin were treated like everyone else then Mayo would have a little more money. The GAA should pay for Mchale park and let us play all our matches there too.

Sound financing planning indicates by paying debt off early, that you save money

So the longer this debt exits, the greater financial loss.

So in that way focusing such a large expenditure on one team is causing more debt themaster

Because it could be going towards repaying said debt at a much faster rate

Who's to say what level of repayment is being met - could it just be the interest rate level?

I know that the Mayo CB had to approach their lender to look for a more favourable payment structure plan

This could indicate a low level of repayment - such as just paying off interest on the current loan

If so you'd be looking at decades to repay such a large debt, and the longer it hangs around, the more it'll cost to pay it off

Is continually spending 100's of thousand's on one team, such a good idea when faced with such a scenario?

And how sustainable is such an approach in the long term?

It's certainly not an ideal situation and I'd question a shared pool of finance idea going towards such a structure.
