Which was the better halt to a 5 in a row?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

1982 football Offaly 1-15 Kerry 0-17

2010 hurling Tipperary 4-17 Kilkenny 0-18

I realise Wexford won the football 1915-1918 and Cork won the hurling 1941-44, but both of those sides were stopped in their province in year 5. Kerry 1982 and Kilkenny 2010 both made a 5th final in a row, but were beaten in the decider. Both iconic moments in GAA.

Which was the better halt & why? Offaly or Tipp?

Cavan beating Kerry in 1933.

Offaly because it was a last gasp winner.

Tipp were always on top in 2010 it never actually looked like Kilkenny were going to win the final in 2010.

My mother and father went to the 1982 final but left early they only found out the result when some fella went up and hugged my Da on the streets after the match.

I'm not sure what you mean by the better halt. But:

Kerry lost a very close game by 1 point, with Offaly scoring a goal in the last minute of the game. They didn't feature in the 1983 final, but returned the next year and went on to win three in a row in 84, 85 and 86.

Kilkenny were well beaten by Tipp in 2010.

Kilkenny manager Brian Cody admitted that his Kilkenny team were second best to a 'driven, spirited, genuine and full of hurling' Tipperary in the All-Ireland final,'We have no excuses and no begrudgery in the slightest. No doubt about it, the better team won the All-Ireland final' he said Wikipedia.

But, Kilkenny have won 4 of the last 5 All-Irelands since that loss in 2010.

Kerry, I think would have much more reason to be disappointed in not winning the 5 in a row, having being so near to achieving it.

The were/are both exceptional teams in that though they didn't achieve the 5 in a row, the both went on to win at least a further 3 All-Finals in the following four years; and there could be more to come from Kilkenny.

Has to be Tipp for me given that great KK team had cake walked so many previous finals.
Just a slight correction on the score 4-17 to 1-18 not that it matters!!
I still hear people saying if Shefflin was fully fit the Cats would have won 5 in a row and its probably not far from the truth. They had the worst preparation ever for a final I'd say in 2010.

I don't have a definition of 'better' Cockney Cat. They are just two iconic finals where two outstanding teams were denied. I just want to hear which one others think was better and why.

Tipp, great match, the offaly match was pretty dire, great finish though, and I think Kerry were more sickened by it than Kilkenny. They still are.
The result (kk/tipp) was in doubt until the two goals at the very end anyway. The result is always in doubt if your leading kk

Offalys win was easily the best as it was much closer game and a far more dramatic win in how it happened.
I think it was Ogie Moran that said afterwards that the players were devastated to have gotten so close and yet so far.
It was a great Kerry team but that would have sealed there spot as the best ever team if that goal hadn't gone in.

There were TShirts printed celebrating Kerry's 5 before the final in 82. It's lovely to see an act of hubris like that punished. ODwyer is said to have locked himself away for days after.

Annoying thread cos the football folk are predictably saying Offaly and hurling folk Tipp.

Let's face it nobody remembers these 2 halts as much as when Down won the Dr McKenna Cup in 2008 to halt Tyrones 5 in a row. They were printing 5 in a row t-shirts from omagh to dungannon. Great to see hubris like that punished.

Offaly in 1982. It was an iconic moment for the GAA. It was like Galway in 1980 (the speech and the song by Joe McDonagh), Clare in 1995 (Ger Loughnane determination at half time and celebrations afterwards) ..to me these are 'hair standing on your neck moments'..Tipp v KK as great game in 2010 and maybe one of the best finals ever but for me it was not iconic in the same way..

I created this thread as a little Hogan Stand experiment. I'm pleasantly surprised logging on today at 57%.....

Aside from my own posts, 14 replies.

57% of replies actually answered both questions (which was better & why)
7% of replies offered an opinion on which was better but not why
29% of replies mentioned games that were not even offered as choices
7% of replies referred to the thread as annoying and suggested a football v hurling divide

Purely a personal opinion here, but the best answers were from those 8 people who answered with a choice & answer to back it up. Thanks to those people for their opinions & memories!
