AI Semi-Final Dublin V Mayo

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Really looing forward to the 2 semi finals,I wouldn't read too much into Mayo's win over us as we weren't at our best really, and Dublin haven't faced a serious test yet so it's going to be an interesting game, hunger on both sides,Dublin probably feel they should have won Sam last year and I think they would have except they couldn't put Donegal away in the first half and just couldn't cope when the game swung against them.
I think most neutrals will be hoping Mayo can win Sam this year,Kerry v Tyrone is also a great match in prospect,if I was betting on it though I'd be going for a Kerry v Dublin final with the Dubs winning it.

I hope Barry Moran is a sweeper against us! Man on man would be crazy for them. The 2013 final proved that as after 25 mins of throwing the kitchen sink at Dublin Mayo had to bring Higgins back as Dublin were carving holes through the centre. Just think Dublin will kill them if that happens.

You're wrong there JayP. Mayo didn't play a sweeper at any stage. Higgins only moved back when Tom Cunniffe got injured. Given that Dublin only got 5 scores in the first half you could hardly say they were carving holes through Mayo. In fact apart from Brogans goal they got most joy out of targeting the clearly crocked Cunniffe!

People criticised some of Horan's decisions afterwards, some of it was unfair. But his decision to leave Cunniffe on was costly and everybody has forgotten it!

I expect Mayo will play some sort of a sweeper. Wouldn't be shocked if Moran, O'Shea and Parsons all started with Parsons following Paul Flynn on kick outs and when he goes deep and play Boyle as a sweeper... or a variation on that theme anyway.

Has Joe or has he not referred Dublin training matches before ? If not then I apologise .
If he has then I don't think it's fair , that's just my opinion.

I don't get people talking about free counts . We didn't give away frees inside our own 40 v Armagh . That's because we didn't foul.

Clondalkin : do you think Gavin will leave ROC isolated with AOS ?

I think Gavin is a good coach and I highly doubt he will .

I don't think Mayo want a shoutout , if they do they will lose . That's why i think Mayo will play at least one sweeper and Gavin will hardly push up completely again .

Superbluedub,
We have lost more than we won so 2011 is forgotten at this stage.
Agree we really should not have messed around at the back and it cost us.
But and I know the Dubs won't accept this but most non dubs would view that performance by Joe as really poor in the second half.

Thats a strange one, Between 40th and the 63rd mins Kerry outscored Dublin 8pts to 1pt the 2nd half was when they were at there most dominant. Can you give examples of some really bad calls?

As mentioned by other posters i would be looking at Tom o' Sullivan, Declan o ' Sullivan, Killian young as reasons ye lost.

Where Dublin can look at D Connolly, K Nolan, A Brogan, E Fennell, Kevin Mc as reason we won they really stood up in that lsat 10mins.

But it maks for a better story down in the kingdom to blame the Ref.

The Right Stuff I promise you Rory will be left one on one with Aidan O Shea , Jim will not change his team for one player he will believe we're good enough to win man on man. Has he ever changed his team for a certain player? He's changed positions but he's never played with sweepers or anything like that.

Jacko- if you really want to rehash that whole game I can.
It's years ago so there's no real point.
But hand on heart it's widely accepted outside of Kerry that the ref played his part in that game.

Off the top of my head:

1. allowing Kev Mac to take 11 steps and score the winning goal

to put it simply - if the rules had been applied correctly, Dublin would not have won the game. Hard to say the ref didn't decide the outcome when a sentence like that is as close to fact as you're likely to get.

Cavanman7, you see players take that amount of steps loads of times. It happens several times in every game.
How about crediting the dubs with having the bottle to stage such a comeback when it looked like the game was over.
I can think of one or two counties who would have thrown in the towel at that stage.

Explain how it was the winning goal? Kerry were still 1pt up after the goal with about 8mins to go. Still plenty of time left..

Thats a bit like the cork county board blaming the ref for penalty decsion as the reason for them not being in a All-Ireland semi final when there was still 15mins to go in the match

We won't play a sweeper, we won't take away a forward.. mayo will I'd imagine play sweeper so the extra defender will be 2nd man on AOS imo. I would expect to see flynner play a deeper role and get up and down the park all day

Paul Flynn looks like he is carrying a knock to me.
He hasn't been his dynamic self.
Joncarter- not just 11 steps but hoped the ball twice.
How can a match official miss that?
It swung momentum.
Regardless the Dubs were very decent afterwards and you wouldn't begrudge them their day...

I don't see the Dubs playing with a sweeper either but think Mayo might be considering it. I can understand why this man-on-man tactic would boggle the mind of posters from counties who insist on playing with 13 in their own half though. Looking at the match ups Id expect AOS to dominate ROC but I cant see any Dublin forward doing the same to his opponent. Considering the quality of Dublins forwards that is a great compliment to Mayos defenders. Keegan v Connolly, Higgins v Brogan and Flynn v Boyle have the makings of great battles.

He's won everything there is to win by going man on man so why would he change now? I'm repeating myself here but Mayo will go man on man as well , Mayo never fear Dublin and they always play man on man so I can't see them changing tactics either.

Realdub ... Excuse those few errors... I meant Kev Mc took about 11 steps, fouled the ball and got away with it.
Clondalkin- Do you think Dublin should adapt their tactics based on opposition or just play one way?

I wouldn't agree he fouled the ball either, compare it to Mullingan's 'great' goal against us and McFadden's against us last year, now that's fouling/showing the ball!

He does get away with steps as do other short-strided players.
