Tyrone wins of '03, '05 and '08 are overstated.

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Over the last 25 years it has been extremely difficult to reach back-to-back finals, let alone retain an All-Ireland football title or make the final the year after.

In '05 Tyrone won a final where their opponent were trying to retain their title. In '08 they beat the same opponent who in that final were actually attempting a 3-in-a-row!

Tyrone actually did the same in '03. They beat an Ulster opponent in the All-Ireland final. Their Ulster opponent were trying to retain their All-Ireland title from '02.

Tyrone, unlike their opponents in the 3 finals they won, never even followed up a title with a final place in the following year.

If Tyrone make the semi-finals, there's a good chance Tyrone will repeat their trick of stopping defending champions retaining their title.

They say good luck comes in threes. Tyrone did well 3 times to stop an opponent retaining their title on All-Ireland final day.

Made me giggle, I was late this morning because I met a traffic light which turned red outside work. Not the fact I was lazy and could not get up on time. Poor Tyrone having to meet and beat a previous winner inagine that.

I agree Tyrone totally overrated like the Kerry team that won finals against the likes of Mayo and Cork who left their heads at the M50.

I actually agree with Liam for once. Witnessed them in the McKenna cup final in 2004 and they were awesome, I'll never forget the football they played that day. I know its only McKenna cup etc etc but the skills, vision and passing were a sight to behold. I said that day that they would win the next 5 All Irelands or be very near to it. Unfortunately the man who lifted the cup that day Cormac McAnallen left us only a few weeks after.

I spotted this reminder of that game there now from the BBC

That was heart breaking to see Cormac there, like young Aaron Devlin, taken too soon.

Tyrone are heroes of the anti-Kerry brigade. I accept that. Armagh made back-to-back finals and won more Ulster titles that decade. Tyrone failed three times to make a final the year after a title. Everyone knows how difficult it is to retain a title. It is some effort by any team to even make the final the year after a title. Definitely bowing out with their boots on.

Lol.The most begrudgery ever espoused on Hoganstand comes from a Kerryman about the Tyrone team of the 00's.....proper order is restored and all is well in the world again. Lol

Ah here, that's the biggest load of BS.

The history books will show that that Tyrone team was one of the best ever football teams.

The history books will also show how poor their record was against Donegal. #smallwins

If that tyrone team were overstated or over-hyped as winners, then you can justify absolutely anything.

Best matches I've ever been at were the 2005 and 2008 finals.
2 great teams with the slightly greater team prevailing on both occasions.

Team of the decade, in a decade of great teams.

That Tyrone team:-
Best block ever 2003 Gormley in the All-Ireland Final
Best Goal ever - Mulligan v Dublin in Croke Park
Best point ever - Dooher v Kerry in 08, on the Cusack side - took two massive hits and still put it over the bar!!

the made the breakthrought in 03 ( before that we in Ulster called them chokers - )

beat armagh in 05 semi - in what many believe was the greatest semi of that era- but to win those without Cormac M.A was amazing....

so for an Armagh man... i hated them..... but they were class.... no easy route in an Ulster Final -they played and won with style

In 2004 they tragically lost their captain and one of the best players in Ireland
In 2006 Peter Canavan, arguably the greatest Gaelic footballer ever, retired and nobody could fill those boots.

The above are not excuses, but huge factors in them struggling the year after they won the All-Ireland

In 2009 they actually came very close to getting to the AI final. If they had have been at full strength, I think they would have beaten Cork in Semi Final, and they would have put up a much stronger fight to Kerry than Cork did.

I have to admit at being shocked by claims being made regards begrudgery. Nothing could be further from the truth. I made a fair statement in my own humble opinion that certain wins have been "overstated". I backed up this point with fair examples. If people disagree it is more than fair enough but claims of begrudgery is absolutely ridiculous and doesn't bring anything to the debate. It's an easy get out clause from discussing the matter at hand. When Tyrone beat us in an amazing display by them in the '03 semi-final, noone could have foreseen Kerry winning more All-Irelands than Tyrone between '04 and '09. For the record Kerry won 4 and Tyrone 2 in those six years. It is always the place of challengers to offer a challenge and raise the bar. Armagh and Tyrone to their credit did that. Kerry had the response. Donegal as new challengers in 2012 to their credit raised the bar again when the beat us in the quarter-finals. Kerry again have responded to a challenge. Great teams respond to challenges. It's what sets them apart.

what i found great about them, was that when they really had to, when it was needed most, they did the right thing, at the right time. A real sign of a great team
The beards were an incredible team and won the hardest won all ireland of the modern era

If Mayo are to win sam this year, they will have to do something similar
