Dublin V Armagh : challenge match

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I've read a lot of comments here and there have been a lot of good posts but here are a few thoughts.

Jim Gavin was utterly embarassing when talking to Colm Parkinson. Parkinson caught him on the hop and Gavin's insistence on using the same couple of lines over & over again were an embarassment for a man who is well educated, a good bloke and a very good manager. I know he didn't want to give much away but he could have spoken more at length about incidents in challenge matches even if he didn't want to speak about this particular incident.

Was this contrived by the Dublin management to avoid being seen as a 'soft touch'? There was a feeling last year that Dublin were tactically and physically outsmarted by Donegal. Armagh have long been known to be a very physically strong team so is standing up to them a way to galvanise players together and show that Dublin are about more than just the lovely free flowing football that they play?

How bad was the incident? We've heard the Dubs player was hospitalised & had stitches. Was the Armagh player badly injured?

This Omerta about challenge matches is very annoying. At club level I've seen nasty things happen to players and then we'd be told in the dressing room to 'leave it on the field'. Once the championship is over it would be great to hear representatives from both camps speak at length on this and for this to be used as a positive ot stop it happening again.

If anything I think this will stand to Dublin. They are class in terms of their movement, scoring etc. But this might make opponents think twice before trying it on with them. Their next game is potentially against Cork so there may be fireworks in that one.

Wouldn't be so sure about that, it would seem that the Dubs came off worse in this particular conflagration.

Slayer....

The gaa waited 12 days to investigate the incident. Embarrassing.

Both teams played a championship fixture 10 days after the incident.

In the 9 days in between.....nothing.

Ps. Gavin wasnt embarrassing at all. He just answered the questions the way he wanted to. Like he was hardly gonna name players from his team to earn them bans?

____

Dublin won the match off the back of it

By all accounts it was good game, despite of the shambles.

Think this is honestly a non runner story now

If it had happened between Sligo v Longford it wouldn't have got this attention

It was an Dublin and an Ulster side... throw in a bit of hysteria, incorrect reporting on exact details, and let the media go nuts

Exactly Jimbo, which is why it should have been nipped in the bud pronto and not allowed to fester like it has.

I think it's done now

Sure it was very much done until the media turned it into a witch hunt against how the GAA tackles these sorts of issues

It was only then that the GAA seemed to react

As soon as the heat came on them

Throw in the fact that it's an Ulster team and Dublin... it's an easy story, and it's eaten up by the soap opera fanatics

That's what sport is to be a lot of blokes...

if there was no video evidence and the ref didn't mention anything in his report on what basis is it ok to fine the teams...would love for armagh to appeal it...dublin obviously won't

since when was cluxton, flynn, connelly, etc b players, there were a mixer with other squad players playing, the dubs were playing this game to practice playing against a mass defence so they had a strong team playing, and the video was turned of when the pushing and shoving started ( hint hint )

It wouldn't be hard to start a fight with a Dub, they wouldn't be as quick to start one in Ulster outside of the safe haven of a football pitch

The media tail is wagging the GAA dog now. Every time something happens, no matter what, the media force the issue until Croke Park capitulates and acts. The GAA has lost it's independence and jumps every time some minor hack writes something or a big headline screams out. The media forced the black card introduction and they now control GAA disciplinary matters. Croke Park has become a puppet on a string to the tabloids. The Dublin/Ulster' issue and 'my da is harder than your da' is a bit of a non event for most fans now though there's no doubt Dublin see playing a Northern/Ulster' side as an important part of their physical preparations.
