Connacht Final: Mayo v Sligo

Don't be so precious good man. I get behind the teams always, we are just weak at full back, argue against it if you want. Caff got bullied by Donaghy in 2 games last year, you blame the ref. I blame the manager, we all have differing opinions. And your impassioned plea about not being negative, get off the stage good man.

Surprised to see Mayo going with Clarke ahead of Hennelley in goals... Clarke's kick outs are poor by modern day standards.

Caff in my opinion is a top class full back.. my major criticism of him, is that he is too nice.. if he could develop a nasty streak like the lads in Donegal i think he would be better.
@The Master.. that is a number of times Horan was poor on the line.. Donegal all ireland final too when Keane was left out in the cold.. he then again got the match ups wrong.

Exactly, was bullied in 2 games last year. Wasn't giving as good as he was getting.

sxckev, I agree that horan should have protected him. However, if the ref wasn't so biased, we still would have won, therefore he is the guy to take the lions share of the blame. Caff and horan still did enough to win the game if the rules were applied correctly... I disagree that we don't have a top class full back, we do. We don't have an infallible full back, but then nobody else does either. It's time to get over the Kerry game flaker. Cafferkey is a good enough player to deserve another chance. I recall marc o'se getting roasted by andy moran, was he dropped forever? If you aren't willing to back our guys, then maybe mayo gaa isn't for you.

That gave me a good bleeding giggle. Donaghy making mince meat of your full-back, twice, had nothing to do with the referee!

Good man your backside. You said he cost us an all Ireland yet insist you weren't talking about the Kerry game, explain that, or retract your comments.

Cafferkey got the same treatment all fullbacks get from donaghy when left isolated with good service coming in. You seem to want to single cafferkey out from other fullbacks for this, why?

He is our best fullback, on his day he is as good as anyone in the country. Your issue seems to be that our best players aren't good enough for you. Nobody is making you to follow the team.

sxckev, I don't know why you are telling me about horan. The point I made was, regardless of the details of his performance - good, bad or indifferent, it should still have been enough to win the game, if the rules were applied. That isnt defending him or even making comment on him, only observing that it wasn't the main factor in the loss.

As for horan making mistakes, no manager gets every call right all the time. Gavin made mistakes in 13, but he won the game, Fitzmaurice made a lot of them in 14, but he won the game. Some mistakes count more than others it seems.
Everyone is an expert afterwards, for example talking about using a blanket defence, but the reality is everybody remembers the blanket defence that was a success, not the numerous ones that were a disaster. There are two roads a manager can go down on any decision - plot and plan every part of it, controlling everything, or trust in your best players and give them a go at taking it on the challenge, and not stifle them with overbearing controls. Both can work or fail for various reasons. The former was both a success and a failure for jim mcguinness depending on the year, while the latter was both a success and a failure for jim gavin, depending on the year. So obviously, there is no one way to do things, and talking afterwards about what should have been done is actually more often than not, hard feelings.

The truth is freeman could have offered no more than anyone else if he wasn't taken off against Dublin, we don't know that he would have been better. In reality, these are calls for the manager to make at the time, all of them were reasonable before the event - conroy was flying it by all accounts going into the game, something that is, again, forgotten by the hindsight-dealers.

SeppBlatter, well that wasn't the point I was making. The point was that even with donaghy getting joy in there, we still should have won if it was reffed correctly. For example, I recall Stephen bray giving O'Carroll a torrid time of it, but if the ref gave meath a dodgey penalty and it won them the game, would you be blaming O'Carroll entirely for the loss? Surely, the dodgey peno was the thing you would feel hard done by? Players can have bad games, it doesn't mean they automatically lose.

If he's our best fullback I wouldn't want to see the others.

Good man Master, you don't blame the full back and you don't blame the manager for what happened in the 2 games, so who was to blame, oh that's right the ref. Retract those statements? Master you are watching too many movies good lad.

Master I have said I don't know how many times on here that Horan should have taken Caff off, you said you don't blame Horan or Caff, so just the ref then?

Master, you were up 5 points with 9 minutes left the first day, and were 7 points up at one stage in the replay. You can point the fingers at the ref, the management, the venue, etc. but ultimately it was the players who lacked the ability to see it out.

Flaker the real reason we lost last year in the replay cos we weren't used to playing in Limerick and sure aren't Kerry well used to playing there and sure it was only up the road for them and Limerick's in Munster sure it was practically a home game for them and it was getting dark near the end and to be honest we're not used to that either.

Who are Kerry by the way? I never heard of them before last year. Someone said to me they won a couple of All Irelands before. Anyone would think that scoring more than your opponents is enough to decide the outcome of a game. Imagine that ?

Full back has been a problem for a number of years, however, I do feel Ger Caff sured that area up reasonably well for a few years there.

Granted he got a doing by Donaghy last yr but so many have and Horan put his trust in the lad which back fired. The manager made a judgement call, that's what he's there for.

The AI final against dublin I thought he did pretty well considering the acres of space Brogan was allowed to exploit. Any foward worth his salt would have had a field day, Caff limited him as best he could. The goal Brogan got in that final was down to communication between goalie and full back. That was the only time I could ever fault Rob Hennelly, he should have cleared house in my opinion. They're humans tho, they make mistakes, Kevin Keane made two the previous AI final by trying to compete with Michael Murphy for a high ball, should have broke it on the first occasion and held on to the ball for the second goal.

Could we have helped our defences in both finals better by playing deeper? Of course, but we're not managers, we have no choice but to follow the managers appointed. I don't particularly like the idea of a Joint-Management team this year but have no choice to row in behind and support the lads.

Third time I have to ask you flaker, what all Ireland did cafferkey cost us? And no, retraction of statements isn't something that only happens in movies... I thought you might have it about you to stand over what you say, and if you wont then at least be man enough to remove it. Im sure you would have enough to say if someone claimed you cost us an all Ireland when you didn't, so why is it different for cafferkey? 'Good lad'

GreenAndRed, like theflaker, nobody is making you follow the side. Everyone wants to improve, but acting like scorned teenagers because we lost a game helps nobody. The team is moving forward, they neither want nor need constant whinging from people who seem to think they are owed something. If that is all you can offer, stay at home, or better yet, tog out. He is our best full back, what possible good can come from you lads knocking him at every turn? Waken up a bit.

Not great to see those changes, Barrett was our best defender in Galway and Keane very close 2nd. Cunniffe was targeted by the Galway management after the first 10 mins, thats how bad he was! Very strange goings on by the management, seem to be biased towards certain players and that can be seen throughout the team.. There will be a lot of patting each others backs after this game saying there was great changes/decisions etc but, as with J Horan, when it comes to the big days, all the flaws and 'great' decisions will come undone.. Also, why keep persevering with Andy and Dillon??
