Connacht Final: Mayo v Sligo

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Mayo team named last night:

David Clarke (Ballina Stephenites)
Ger Cafferkey (Ballina Stephenites)
Donal Vaughan (Ballinrobe)
Keith Higgins (Ballyhaunis)
Lee Keegan (Westport)
Tom Cunniffe (Castlebar Mitchels)
Colm Boyle (Davitts)
Seamus O'Shea (Breaffy)
Tom Parsons (Charlestown Sarsfields)
Diarmuid O'Connor (Ballintubber)
Aidan O'Shea (Breaffy)
Kevin McLoughlin (Knockmore)
Andy Moran (Ballghaderreen)
Cillian O'Connor (Ballintubber)
Jason Doherty (Burrishoole)

Two changes from the Galway game, out go the injured Kevin Keane and Chris Barrett and in come Ger Cafferkey and Donal Vaughan.

I don't except us to line out like that. I can't see Donal at FB. Higgins to possibly play a sweeper role. We can't afford to leave the likes of Ger Caff isolated in defense which has been our major problem. Despite everyone saying we don't score enough, it is factually wrong, we do score enough to win games it letting in high scores the other end that costs us.

Mayo should and I repeat should win Sunday but I am not counting out this sticky Sligo side. It will be closer than many think.

Harsh on Barrett. All of Cunniffe, Boyle, Keegan and Higgins were worse than him the last day out.

Really? We don't have a top class full back in Mayo that is why they are trying Keane there this year. Our weakness there has cost us an All Ireland.

Are you blaming caff for what happened last year against Kerry then award Horan "Mayo Person of the Year". He was left out to dry.. Horan should of put one of the O'Shea's back to protect the D.. we would have had another shot at Donegal if he had done.. We need to learn from the mess and understand match up defence.. Caff does not have the size to mark donaghy, very few in country do.

nevermind marking donnaghy and murphy, lets see how they get on trying to deal with Marren, Kelly and Hughes! If we can get enough ball around the middle and get it near these lads they will do damage!

sxckev, I agree that horan should have protected him. However, if the ref wasn't so biased, we still would have won, therefore he is the guy to take the lions share of the blame. Caff and horan still did enough to win the game if the rules were applied correctly... I disagree that we don't have a top class full back, we do. We don't have an infallible full back, but then nobody else does either. It's time to get over the Kerry game flaker. Cafferkey is a good enough player to deserve another chance. I recall marc o'se getting roasted by andy moran, was he dropped forever? If you aren't willing to back our guys, then maybe mayo gaa isn't for you.

Not blaming Caff, he should have been moved, he isn't a top class full back, we don't have one. Your post is a little strange, you admit he needs protection on the edge of the square yet you are thanking god he is back in. He is in due to an injury as far as I am aware.

Master will you grow up, get over the Kerry game, says the man mentioning the ref again?!!!! I will back all our players, whether it is Caff or not, it's hardly his fault he is picked and I know he does his best. He just isn't a physical full back, there is a reason he isn't picked there this year, if he gets his place back then fair play. And yes Horan left him out to dry. Can't believe you brought up the ref again, embarrassing.

Defense these days is a numbers game....very rare you see a Donegal defender left alone, they defend in numbers.

He isn't even a good full back Flaker. We haven't had a quality Number 3 since Kevin Cahill was playing.

Master I never brought up the Kerry game, and you brought up the ref, it may be you who needs to get over the Kerry game.

I just think Caff is far better than Keane.. on many occasions he was let down by our attacking half back line

Maybe you are right, but both are not in the same league as the likes of Neil McGee, not their fault just a fact! I agree that they are at times exposed but for a guy who is around 6ft 2 Caff gets pushed around far too easily.

May be changes before the game but I spot 3 weak links in the Mayo team I'm afraid Donie Vaughan, Tom Cunniffe, Diarmuid O'Connor, I got it spot on with Cunniffe being picked in the wrong position v Galway and was cleaned in the 1st half

So if you aren't talking about the Kerry game, what games are you referring to flaker? You say he cost us an all Ireland, well he played well in both finals, won a load of ball off murphy and brogan, so it sort of narrows it down. What all Ireland did he cost us?

You realise he has an all star, and is widely regarded to have deserved a second one, right? So arguably the best fb in the country for two years running - and not top class? Those were the years we were in the finals too, so how did he cost us an all Ireland again?

As for not being physical, he has marked loads of physical players - michael murphy, benny coulter, colm o'niell, the only guy who got the better of him was donaghy - who gets the better of everyone in that type of situation. If he was marking the comer against galway we would have fared far better also.

Some time soon we need to realise that this negative sh*** or turning on our own guys all the time, is part of the reason our lads dont perform. We are knocking their confidence. If you don't have faith in them, then stay away, because we are better off without you. What did the Kerry lads say when moran skinned marc o'se? 'Ah sure he missed the goal chances anyway'. They have faith in their men and are reasonable enough to see that marc o'se is a good player, and the team is better with him in it. We seem to fall down at that hurdle.
