It's very very rare that you see a ball being hopped for a player taking too long over a free, especially one that they are shooting from.

There are a number of outfield players who take very long with their frees yet people only complain when it's a goalkeeper. It's probably because they don't notice the delay when it is an outfield player but it seems more obvious when it is a keeper even though keepers taking frees doesn't really delay the game at all.

Larry Tompkins spoke an enourmous amount of baloney in that article and an article earlier in that on the same topic that week by Martin Breheny was absouluetly dreadful aswell in my opinion.

Eliminate the short kickout, and stipulate that all kickout's must pass your own 45 or else be retaken.

This would open games up, with Increased focus in winning the midfield.

Glorified Go Games to an extent is how he wants it....everyone stay in your position there like a good lad! some sort of zonal buzzer system needed next to alarm when you stray!
-So if you are not blessed with 2 towering or strong midfielders then forget about winning kickouts obviously, but you have to land the ball in the zone. (although the tactic may be to land it 45.5 mtrs out from either end so the pack can pounce?)
- if there is an injury/sending off to first choice, your tactics to circumvent depleted midfield is limited.
-will the 2 midfielders simply haul their men to the ground if they can't win the ball? rotate the midfielders.
-limits free expression and quick kick outs, and likely slow the game down (the team that chooses to go short has a certain confidence and level of skill required to get it out of defence). If a good forward does not have the ball they should be trying to get it..by tackling or finding space to get a pass or draw defenders...whichever is relevant.
-Will we see a line of players waiting across the 2 45's waiting to pounce in a pack.
-Not all keepers will hit the 45 in difficult conditions...
-2 "lines" set up rugby style in anticipation of the kickout being won to run the ball. At Least with current rules you don't really know where the ball will go for sure.. this side of the game will be predictable and boring.
Minimum pitch length = 130 mtrs to max 145 that gives a length of 40 to 55 mts of the pitch to FOUR players at kick outs.
Remember this is also supposed to improve club games where there are varying levels of quality and ability, stronger and weaker teams..... So the attacking team send all the Forwards way up front and the defenders will tend to go with them (or leave a free man & have to devise another tactic)... the 2 midfielders (possibly winning all the ball) have acres of room to catch, run and shoot relatively unchallenged?
The game has and will continue to evolve, the "Blanket" has been beat before.
The mark and reward for more difficult scores are other options rather than divisive rules... you see there is nothing stopping or forcing a team playing the style they prefer (or want to) at the moment.

Would banning the hand pass altogether be a step forward?

The Kerry 4 in a row team of the 70's/80's used the hand pass to good effect to score goals. Then scoring with a handpass was banned. Then you could fist a point.

The game is used to that rule being altered, why not go a step further & ban it altogether?

Just gauging ideas, not saying it would fix football.

Brolly's rule would be a killer to the game. Imagine the cynical time wasting on kick outs.
The kick passed the 45 part is actually worth talking about. Maybe trial it in the league and see how it goes.
But I have seen plenty of club games played in terrible conditions where there isn't a hope of kicking the ball passed the 45 so what would happen there?

GAA is fine as it is tho, no need to change the rules.
Managers and players alike need to change their thinking and figure out how to beat the puke football. Not rely on rule changes to make it easier for them.

Not a chance it would work. For example if the ultra defensive teams like donegal were playing and had 12 players back it would take forever for them to line out in the 6-2-6 formation after a score. I for one dont see anything wrong with the game as it is. Just media and sourcrouts on here trying to create problems.
I always enjoy the start to the championship and cant wait for this year to get underway.

Interesting idea. ... However, it would give a distinct advantage to a team that had a good midfield partnership.

I think Joes system is too contrived. Maybe he needs to go to bed and have a long sleep.

Joe B beating his drum again. It's a very narrow restricted proposal and very little thought gone into it. No breaking ball into a group is going to be absent. I am a firm believer in game evolution and good winning coaches will overcome dull areas in our game. Once you get this coach winning other coaches will follow. Anyway it's good to have teams playing with different systems. We can't have all teams playing like Dublin or Mayo.
Anyway is Joe Brolly on live TV for another summer? God forgive. I think I will follow SKY instead. I don't think I can listen to him for another summer.

Good to see people putting forward ideas. While all sports evolve I don't think any sport has changed nearly as much as Gaelic football, it's almost like a different sport the way it's now played. People saying other sports are defensive and more strategic and this makes the game more interesting is nonsense.
Firstly the strategic element of other sports are an integral part of those sports and usually accommodate the skills of those sports (American Football being a prime example, the big defensive hits are what the game is defined by).
Secondly when talking about a Gaelic football team manager copying another team and playing 13 men behind the ball, you wouldn't exactly need to be Napoleon to come up with this strategy.
If you follow a sport and see it evolving to practically a different sport in the space of about 10 years it is crazy. What's happening in Gaelic football is that the skills that define Gaelic football are becoming irrelevant as a way to win Gaelic football matches.

Does football really need saving? It fine as it is. Teams who cant break down blanket defenses generally lack the tactical, and more specifically the foot passing skills to do it. Corofin in their All Ireland semi against Vincents gave an incredible demonstration of how to break down a team when Vincents had flooded players back with good, accurate skillful long range foot passing.

IMAO, it is simply up to teams to adapt and play what is in front of them, find ways around it and focus on their own skills. One thing that annoys me about the media is they think county teams have a duty to entertain them, whereas how they play is no one else's business.

Galwaydublin your whole point is ruined the minute you use Vincent's as an example, Corofin great team all the same.

Has anyone ever been at a Junior C game in February with a stiff breeze. The keeper hitting the 45 would be a sight to behold.

Because the game would turn into a mindless hoofing match. Sometimes it is better to take a handpassing option, as sometimes it is good to send it long.

My idea to save Gaelic is to get rid of Joe Brolly, Pat Spillane and a few other moaners.

I actually don't really think it would end up in mindless hoofing at all. However I don't think it'll change the game much either, if anything it'll lead to a worse spectacle.

It would merely mean that players would play small little foot passes to each other, almost like soloing the ball into each other's hands.

The hand passing that people give out about is usually done under no pressure backwards or lengthways across the pitch in order to keep possession. This possession game would continue easily enough even if you banned the handpass. In fact there'd way less attacks as teams only option would be kicking long as the option of running at pace at the defence would be gone seen as you'd not be able to offload the ball quickly and smartly.

Goals would defo dry up as well if you banned hand passing. More goals are set up by hand passing than by kick passing.

Galwayford it's bad enough watching two blanket defences trying to play rugby league then you want to get rid of the best entertainment of Brolly n Spillane no chance there the best thing about the Sunday Game nowadays.
