Not saying he isnt a great player. just dont see him making a team from 1990 onwards. Maybe the bench ;) DoireCityFC (Derry) - Posts: 1580 - 15/04/2015 12:02:57 1714400 Link 0 |
Google "rival in awe of Meath ace McDermott". It's an article from the independent at that time with opinions from midfielders he played against including tohill rather then tit for tat opinions from us. This proves more then I can argue, not the most skillful but the best in the business at the art midfield play. Case closed DoireCityFC (Derry) - Posts: 1580 - 15/04/2015 12:04:30 1714402 Link 0 |

I would say maurice fitzgerald. partially because we didnt see enough of him that we should have Donegalman (None) - Posts: 3846 - 15/04/2015 12:28:40 1714416 Link 0 |
DoireCityFC, that list looks suspiciously like the top 30 on the Independent's Top 125 list from 2009. If you're going to put it up, you should at least say that it's not your own. Thomas Clarke (Tyrone) - Posts: 1002 - 15/04/2015 12:31:32 1714418 Link 0 |
That was more a response too the ridiculous Statement that McDermott struggled with physically stronger opponents.....I didn't know there was any to start with. As I said I think tohill was class and if I was a Derry man would probably pick him but as a Meath man it's Johnny mc. But the other names mentioned I have issues with, particularly Sean kavanagh....he's not in the same parish as any midfielder from the 90s on, I don't even think it's his best possition. Anybody that puts kavanagh in the bracket of greatest midfielder is away with the fairies to be honest southmeathgael (Meath) - Posts: 978 - 15/04/2015 12:41:38 1714424 Link 0 |

The nineties really was a golden age for midfielders , of course tactics were different but the high fielding was exceptional , my personal favourite Anthony Tohill Damothedub (Dublin) - Posts: 5193 - 15/04/2015 13:33:17 1714450 Link 0 |

I've been watching since the mid 80's, I'd consider Canavan as the best player I've seen. TheWestIsAwake (UK) - Posts: 529 - 15/04/2015 14:27:37 1714492 Link 0 |
McDermott could not handle physical players??? I really have seen it all now.! :D ziggy32001 (Meath) - Posts: 8354 - 15/04/2015 14:29:21 1714494 Link 0 |
I always thought McDermott and Tohill were by far the best midfielders in the 90's,regardless of who people prefer.. ziggy32001 (Meath) - Posts: 8354 - 15/04/2015 14:31:40 1714498 Link 0 |
Ya I would rate Joyce amongst the best forwards I have seen,and I also having been watching since the mid-80's ziggy32001 (Meath) - Posts: 8354 - 15/04/2015 14:33:34 1714500 Link 0 |
I try not to talk up past Meath players because let's be honest we all look back on our own favourably. But McDermott was a beast for us, I'd say he's probably our greatest ever midfield player, Meath haven't been a top team since he left.
