Dublin v Mayo

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

A deeply disappointing display from the men in green and red last Saturday night. Irrespective of heavy training schedules, being safe from relegation, U-21's being out during the week etc., to ship a 15 point beating at home from one of your main rivals for Sam is unacceptable.

Ok, the league is the league and must be taken with a pinch of salt, but some of the noises coming out of the Mayo camp recently are a bit worrying, especially when the likes of Holmes and Donal Vaughan seem perplexed by the opposition setting up defensively and counter-attacking. Cork away is never an easy fixture and the lads need to show some real character to avoid being drawn back into the relegation battle.

Don't mean to take anything away from Dublin though, their pressing and tackling were excellent throughout the field, and their score-taking was efficient and ruthless.

Gleebo your comment "noises coming out of the Mayo camp" is how rumors start. I suspect you are trolling but if you have extra information then share it.
Last week everything was rosey after getting a good win up in Derry and now today it's end of the world stuff. Yes it was bad sat night but I would be far from pushing any panic button yet. Even the great Kingdom were hammered last year in the league. Dublin were fired up and were on top of their game, we were flat and way of the pace. Teams in Division 1 are so good that if you are not on your game you can get hammered. I think we will see a much improved performance down in Cork.

McMenamin ran a mile and clearly hopped the ball twice for the second goal- totally ignored by RTE. Maybe they were still thinking about Cardiff?

Yew Tree

It would need to be a hugekly improved performance..but he only way is up for Mayo afater Satuday nights display

Cork are in great shape at the minute but it will be interesting to see what team they put out

They can probably afford to lose this one and still get into a semi-final

I'm very confident that Dublin will beat Derry..so if you boys lose

That put Dubs ahead on 7pts going into last game...

Mad aul League this year...

Yew Tree, when I say "noises coming out of the camp" I meant some of the comments made by Holmes, Connelly, Vaughan etc. in post-match interviews, rather than tittle-tattle (I'm based abroad anyway, so don't have personal access to the players). I'm inclined to worry a little when the management and senior players admit that they were surprised that Tyrone played on the counterattack, given recent football history. Over the last few seasons Mayo have often struggled against teams who flood men back against them, as we tend to over-elaborate a bit in attack, and apart from against a 13-man Monaghan side the script hasn't changed much this season.

League form is never a great indicator for what lies ahead come the championship, but I can't believe that a 15-point drubbing can be part of any shadow boxing strategy or tactical plan from the management, given the amount of seasoned players we had out there. At least one big performance is needed to ensure league safety now, and the lads must roll up their sleeves and show a bit of pride that was missing on Saturday night.

Ah Gleebo please I can take the "not our full panel excuse" but please don't use the "I heard they were training very hard this week" excuse please man how fit do these guys have to be? Like how unfit does an inter county player get in off season I can't imagine it's that bad? Can a team just win cause they were the better team on the night anymore?

clondalkindub - Dublin were the better team by a country mile and no mayo person will disagree with that but that does not mean Mayo people are not allowed to question our own performance with was a complete no show. Mayo were not at the races. I think some of us in Mayo have a habit of over celebrating wins and likewise going the complete opposite in defeat.

Dublin full strength Mayo only had 60% of there panel? Cillian O Conor Andy Moran and Mickey Conroy off the top of my head were the only ones missing no?

Eddietheexile the whole country knows KevMac bounced the ball twice and the goal should not have stood no need to tell everyone what we already know and I don't think any Mayo posters care, yew tree yous had a bad night it happens of course you should be questioning team and management Mayo will be ok there a very team but I'm sorry this training really hard excuse drives me nuts Everytime a team is bet now it's cause they trained really hard that week.

I honestly don't know how you took what you did out of my post: what I am saying is that there are no excuses for such a performance, irrespective of it being the league, having U-21s playing on Thursday etc etc. Dublin were the better team by a country mile and I acknowledged that in my previous post.

None of the players in the second list would be expected to start in most cases, with the possible exception of Chris Barrett.

Mayo without C'OC are a toothless force

No question he's the king pin for them in the forwards

They need him 100% for Championship

Will he be back for their next couple of games... they may lose out on a semi-final spot without him

Good result for us, we needed it. Championship a different animal ,but for us should be safe now ,with chance of making semis and team looking very organised the other nigth, Need to beat Derry (although they will be fired up to give a good account of themselves in Croker after last year) Monaghon game for us will be another good test.
Very interesting league so far, with most teams getting a mixture of performances .

Spent 2 nights down in Castlebar and have to say we had great craic with the locals. Needless to say they were all very critical of the performance on Sat and a lot seemed to think that this was the end of a golden generation. Nothing much coming through seems to be the general consensus and with the likes of Dillon and Moran coming to the end of their days in a county shirt they seem very pessimistic. Have to say their best team still looks a mighty force on paper. I would read nothing into Saturday's game. Both teams will be different propositions come the summer. Great to see us firing on all cylinders though and hats off to Tomas Brady who I have had my doubts about but he put in a great shift for us on Sat. Roll on Derry in two weeks.

We were told the same about kerry and we all know what they done Joxer , they won a minor all ireland only two years ago they'll all be coming through soon, way to early for writing Mayo off they'll be back.

clondalkindub, this is actually a good thing for mayo in my opinion. Few guys were taking liberties with possession and doing their own thing. It is a kick up the backside for them. We will be written off now and unfancied in most quarters - where we play our best football.

losing players to aussie rules doesnt help but it seems rather an overreaction considering they just won the all ireland minor?

Yeah I know what you're saying Clondalkin but in fairness, it's a big step up from minor. If you're lucky you might get 3 or 4 fellas making senior, 5 at a push unless you have a really exceptional minor team. You only have to look at Tipp or Tyrone, and their recent minor successes, to realise that minor doesn't always translate to senior success.

Could be some cute-hoorism going on though like you say! Won't write them off just yet.
