Dublin v Mayo

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

It was edge of the seat stuff TYSAM no question, but if in say, ten years, thats the game we see week after week after week it would be a shame. At the moment there are as many exciting teams as there are functional ones, but the fear among purists is that the balance is tippin in the latters favour.
According to the RTE website (didnt see the game myself) there were Donegal fans booing their own teams style of play last week against monaghan. the report also claimed that Donegal spent periods of the game not even trying to attack, they were literally just handpassing the ball across the field to one another. Again, im only going on the RTE teletext report.
Now Monaghan may have produced a defensive masterclass last week, but come on lads, if that catches on itll be a bit of a disaster in fairness.

Joxer Monaghan only put the blanket on first the first time last sunday. Monaghan were as naive as Mayo in their first three games and went man for man.

Fabio when exactly have Galway played with the blanket defence? They still play with lads like Danny Cummins, a 5ft8 9 stone 'tricky' corner forward and backs like Bradshaw who sees defending as an optional task on a football field.

Last week Tyrone weren't that good and just looked better against a poor performance. This week Dublin looked good against poor Mayo performance. Don't get carried away with either display as its only March OK.
Come August you'll find all this stuff irrelevant and the blankets will be thrown off.

Man to man or man to boy Joxer?

Beats the heck out of the type of game to be seen in Letterkenny last week anyway. Good open football. Great man to man contests. No swarming of attackers.

Joxer....."a good football match all round".
You can't be serious with that remark. There was no game there tonight. Not any of note that's for sure. It was over as a contest in the first half. The second half was about Mayo trying desperately, and failing,to stem the Dublin onslaught but by doing nothing constructive to actually succeed in that regard. The Mayo management were seriously at fault tonight as it's not as if the Dubs started to open up a big lead in the last 15 mins or so. It was apparent from the early first half what was happening. Abysmal performance by Mayo. All credit here to the Dubs...they were great. Did the job perfectly. If Basticks block had been in a tight all Ireland semi final/final we would never forget it. Brilliant stuff.

Sorry Seanie I should have said a good game compared to last Sat in Croke Park. Just because a game is not close it doesn't mean that the standard of football isn't high. Similarly if a game is close it doesn't mean that it is good, ask Donegal and Monaghan fans. All of the skills were exhibited tonight. I think we only hit a couple of wides so shooting accuracy was excellent. Mayo were poor. Dublin played better than last week but have a lot more to give I think.

No no cuchulainn, youve got the stats mixed up.
13 500 was the amount of hand passes in the game.

Incase my point was missed by some. I think Basticks block on his own goal line was far more impressive than the goal he tapped in on the other end. That's called brilliant defending and was for me the most jaw dropping incident of that whole game. It was a sublime defensive play and it was great to watch and there was not a better play than that executed the whole game and I don't care what anybody says.

Mayo looked like a team that were aftrer doing hard running sessions, they were slow and flat from the off. But mayo played a defensive game by droppin lads back but yet dublin forwards always had space on the ball and to run into and then when mayo were coming out they had no half forward line to hit and relied on keegan most of the time to run with the ball. Very poor preformance from mayo

now thats gaelic football!!!
after last weeks tir eoghain version of soccer mentality meets basketfootball hybrid game
its great to see football played with the boot.
the biggest difference for dublin was the attitude and the body language
last week we looked like abunch of lads who wanted to be anywhere but croke park
like it was a chore to have to fulfill the fixture
last night they challenged themselves and wanted to be there they were hungry to play
and went out with the correct frame of mind and as a supporter thats what you ask for.
thought brady had a brilliant game and have been saying it last year and this year
that centerfield would suit him and he took his three points really well.
connolly and flynn kick passing made big difference and overall was a very good team performance
as the song goes thats entertainment thats entertainment wooooowwwwwwwwww

once again have not seen a match this year where ref or officals didnt make major mistakes
second goal we got kev mac clearly hopped the ball twice and ref didnt blow
second half o shea pulled a dublin player going forward to the ground and got a yellow card
about 1 minute later dean rock committed an identical foul and recieved a black card
consitency from the officals is clearly missing.
you would have to wonder what pat mceneaney is looking at when he comes out and backs his refs
saying they are putting in flawless performances
yet again nothing will be done over these poor calls
just like last week hawkeyes malfunction wasnt even brought up in the media
showing that when a ball hits the post the technology will automatically reward a point
and not where the ball went after it hit the post

Defending has not been Dublin's main problem this season to date. The goal concession rate both in terms of opportunities and scored has reduced to sustainable levels to date. The problem is attacking, against Tyrone the decision making was woeful and we were steeped to get the point.

Last night against a dreadfully poor Mayo performance we were better, better in the sense how two All Star performers who are two of the elite players in the county would improve any team.

If have no problem in saying that the Dublin attack should pivot on Connolly this year. Let Connolly work the oracle for 50 mins then bring in Alan Brogan and let them both at it in the final quarter. If a blanket defense is going to be worn down by a side who refuses to play same then quick fast accurate kick passing is an absolute must.

Dublin played a good game, always made the correct decisions and everyone played for each other, Mayo were like a crowd of pensioners, too slow, off the pace and not thinking, you'd swear they had a training session done a few hours earlier. In all honestly you have to look at Mayo's performance over the 5 League games, a win away to Kerry but the kingdom hadn't even trained together before that game and were on holidays in the build up to the game, a defeat at home to Tyrone, Mayo were woeful, no game plan and the highlight was Pat Holmes saying that we haven't seen this type of play for years, what games is he watching? In round 3 a home win v Monaghan because Monaghan lost their discipline, again couldn't defend properly and no game plan. Rd 4 away win v Derry, no game plan and should have lost it only for their best player who came on as a sub and got 4 or 5 pts before blackcarded. And lastly last night v Dublin, no game plan, no movement, no proper handpassing or kickpassing, no calling for the ball, no tackling, no defending, no attacking, not a clue. Yerdict Mayo Co Board picked the wrong management team, Kevin Walsh and Galway (no disrespect to Leitrim) must have wet themselves laughing, Mayo won't win in Salthill and it'll be the qualifier route where it will end when up against a solid team and defeat. At least we'll get the club champs played early this summer

I know kiddo, (and you'll get to enjoy it as well on tg4 :-) ) it's gona be a tough game to watch in fairness , and I mean for both sets of supporters coz I'd be pretty certain we'll play the blanket as well . The only thing is that I think these next 3 games will be great for us coz we'll be playing against the 3 best defensive systems in the country and we'll more than likely be playing 2 of these 3 teams if we get to the quarters and semi's of the allireland so good preparation for us. Fair play to Ruairi galaher for putting out such a strong team and I'd expect Donegal to win by 3-4 points tbh, Tralee never suits our way of play and iv seen us lose more games there over the past 5 years in the league then we've won.
Were you at the game last nite In castlebar ? I read that Connolly and Flynn were back for ye they must have made a big difference.
