Trips North a geography lesson!

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Some interesting and honest comments from the Cork footballer James Loughrey reported today on Hoganstand. James is an Antrim native but states the following about Cork's trips up North - 'The boys (his team mates) don't have a clue. They think Enniskillen is beside Monaghan and Donegal is beside Monaghan - it's a geography trip on the way up. They don't even know if it was sterling or Euros they were using. They didn't even know if they had to visit a Bureau De Change on the way up'. Now seriously this island is not Australia, do the Cork footballers not even know that 3 counties of Ulster are in the Republic? Have we become so detached and ignorant of each other on this island that we don't even know or care anymore? Sad state of affairs.

For some reason or another a lot of the southern counties don't care to learn about the British counties.

Wouldn't worry about it to be honest as people who are like that are like that in relation to their own regions also.

I was more interested in the comment that the Cork players don't class the way ulster teams play as football! Have Cork not started playing with a sweeper this year?

Relax. Loughrey was probably just winding up his team mates. No need for a geopolitical lecture.

We have become that detached Ulsterman, and I'll tell you this there are counties further north than Cork where the people would be clueless as to what's what in terms of geography. The simple reality is that the ubiquitous "national question" was once something discussed at dinner tables, or down the pub, but that died a long time ago. Then the Irish discovered the Celtic Tiger and became all "European" and stuff. We're further apart than ever before.

So every person in ulster knows the exact geography of every county in the south? Your default setting appears to be to take offence or look to be wronged in some way...

What a stupid attempt at creating a provocative thread. Stick to the ball Ulsterman.

Some Cork footballers are maybe just a little thick?

Or you know maybe Loughrey is messing about with his team mates.

It's called the People's Republic of Cork for a reason. Asking a Cork person what he/she knows about Ulster is like asking a North Korean what he/she knows about New Zealand. Home is where the heart is and all of that.

I would go for the latter MesAmis - reads to me like a guy taking a chance for a bit of ribbing of his team mates. In the wider debate though there is a serious level of ignorance from some in relation to cast off Counties - even the sister in law asked me years ago did we drive on the same side of the road. Told her No ans said she'd want to see the chaos at the border with ones criss tossing lanes.

Geography is not a strong point for many in this country. Everyone in Dublin, especially the national media refers to everywhere outside the M50 as basing "down" he country eve of they are going ACROSS to Mayo or Galway or UP to Derry.

Criss crossing - criss tossing is something I wouldn't be encouraging on a public forum.

Yes but why then is the programme ahead of the AI final called 'up for the match' ? Are people from Mayo going 'up for the match' to Dublin or 'across for the match' to Dublin? Maybe the Dubs aren't the only ones who are mixed up.

I always get lost once I cross over the border. Sterling starts to fall out of my pocket and bounce all over the road. Maps turn into puzzles, and the sat-nav starts to use an aliens voice. Mind you, if you ever drove around southern fermanagh, you could be in x files territory. All jokes aside, so long as the cork pilot didnt get lost when he flew up to enniskillen, thats all that matters. I think that they were a good hour and 20 minutes away from blaney anyway, so the next time they should just fly to dublin!

I'm sure the Cork lads aren't that ignorant ! They've probably been up to the Kremlin once or twice.

They probably just dont think its that important Ulsterman. You can be sure there are plenty of ullshhhtermen who are ignorant of the geography of the republic.

I agree there is ignorance but I think a lot is just plain ignorance of anything not in their immediate vicinity.

Loads of people are just stupid!
