Sacrifice our top players another year?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

International Rules.. That time of year is fast approaching, the aussie coach already declaring that they will take no prisoners.. What a great way to reward our top amatuer players. lets just hope they dont get too seriously hurt and are able to work the next day

Clearly this won't be a game for nice boys like the last time when it really did look like men against boys. We needed more men like mcgeeney on the day. This won't be a game for the goochs of this world, we need men who can play the game within the rules obviously, but who can also mix it if needs be. It will be interesting when it comes around to it what selection of players will be picked.

I think all Irish people are sick of watching our top players get embarressed! Never mind the skillful lads, Boylan must include players that will not allow themselves to be bullied....

Ronan Clarke
Francie Bellew
Shane Ryan
Ciaran Whelan
Cullen
Galvin
O'Maghony
Cussen
Pierce O'Neill
O'Hara (sligo)
Gormely
Sean Cavanagh
Eoin Lennon

is it definitly going ahead, all the aussies wanted to do is batter people the last time, so i agree, whoever we put out must be able to handle a dig, and unfortunitly throw one aswell. i'm not one for violence in sport, or any violance for that matter, but i do have pride , and dont partically wanna see us kicked and pile-drived around the pitch again

You are an idiot Daytona and how that above post was allowed up defies all logic to me. You have not got a clue about anything, your most recent post on the Non GAA thread was the work of a child as is most your posts.

Have to say I'm just sick watching it full stop. Wish they'd just forget about the whole thing. Can't for the life of me see any gain in it!

Its hard to know what to expect from this years series. it will hardly be as bad as last year! or will it?

i agree with the geezer point, i was right beside the incident where he sorted out one of the aussie's with EASE! then they went up and scored a goal while this was all happening.

Try and get a few Rugy boys, One of the top of my head would be Tommy Bowe he played football for monaghan and I'm sure he would be happy to throw himself around a bit.

I wouldn't go for a physical team cause even our most physical lads will not be able to compete with the aussies. The only area we can beat them in is skill and we should go for lads who will be able to move the ball fast and kick scores accurately. Or we could go with my preferred option and disband the whole thing!

lads, it doesnt matter if we send large boys down there or not, the the aussies will not stand down if they are out for a fight, we seen it last time, the more we fought back the worse they got (and thats not playing within the rules). Send our best compromised rules players down there to play compromised rules, if the aussies cannot take a fair beating, pull out of the farce mid game if it takes it. We should not lower ourselves to their level.

The only other solution to cancelling the whole thing (again, again) is carrying over bans received in the game to the domestic game.

Also, do they still call it the Cormac McAnallan Cup, if they do, I ask those of you who are saying go down and beat lumps out of them is that really the way we want to remeber a great honest footballer?

this game is pointless. its played in no kind of spirt at all and has turned into and will continue to be a joke in my eyes.

the australians seem to be overly agressive and see the international rules as a way to vent their fustrations after a long hard season. as far as i know there are huge financial penalties for striking in aussie rules. this means that it rarely happens. dicipline is faily good because of it. in the international rules there is no such threat of reprisal so the aussie and some irish lose the plot.

the idea of having a game of compromise rules is great but i dont think its practical anymore

No he just threw a hissy fit for a few days because the ozzies were a bit.....ahem....over physical (yes - this coming from the former meath manager, i know, i know) and saint geraghty got a bit of rough house treatment. It was so disappointing to see that happen to a player who would never get involved in such behaviour himself

Good point well made. ireland will never be convincin at this game because of the difference in rules. where concessions were made to ireland in the size and shape of the ball, similar concessions where made to australia in the type of tackles allowed. it is perfectly legal to grab a fella round the waste and throw him to the ground. the irish fellas just arent used to this. it usually take them half a game to get up to speed. which is understandable.

the irish type of short passing and hand passing isnt suited for the rough and tumble of international rules. unless they become much much more physical and agressive in the tackle... within the rules.... and play a more expansive game... its gonny be a walk over for australia again.
