Players that never fulfilled their potential

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Dean Barrett Na Fianna. Was player of the series for Ireland U.17's in Australia. Played for Meath at all undergae levels and for the Juniors. supposedly playing reserve team soccer for Longford town now. Such a waste of a great talent. Would defo have gone the whole way.

I remember that Philip Treacy playing for St. Pats in the colleges final about 7 or 8 years ago and he was the talk of the county. Big things were expected of him, a bit like Joe Sheridan more recently. Is he still playing for NOM?

the list is endless alright, every club in the county has two or three. Heres is a few to mention:
Frankie Murphy-Trim, Paul Murray-Bohermeen, Joey Melia-Moylagh?or Moynalty?, Dean Barrett-Na Fianna, David Murtagh-O'Mahony's, Michael Lowther-Trim, Barry Regan-O'Mahony's --Most of these players played together with Meath Minors a few years back.

Wayne Sherlock was a brillant underage player typically big and strong with great defensive or midfieler quailities.

Wayne is now in Chicago with his own buisness and is a member of the Parnells club.

Big loss to Drumconrath and Meath and Im sure good addition to where he is now but methinks in the years to come we will be seeing more of this

meath minor team that reached the 2002 all-ireland final,

where the hell is half of that team? players like o'connor, joe and farrell made the step up but what about:

eoin dunne - languishing in junior b with boardsmill
paul murray - still playing with ultans
joe melia - catching kickouts with moylough but what else?
frankie murphy - never heard of again, supposedly the next great midfielder for meath
barry regan - underage prodigy with pats and meath but faded away
david murtagh - ditto
brian o'reilly - good man marker, but cant nail a place with meath
ger mccullagh - meath junior but never a meath senior
sean stephens - is he still playing with dunsany?
o'halloran - corner back but never heard of him again?

The lists are endless and i repeat again , there are two or three from every club who had the potential to do things but its all a matter of opinion.I wonder can anyone name players who never really did anything in nunderage and yet have featured for the Metah seniors at some point! That would be a much smaller list and would cut out the endless shoulda coulda woulda lists!

John Mcdermot , peader byrne and Wayne Reilly are three i can think of.

I don't think Donal Curtis played underage for Meath but I could be wrong.

Lads, nowadays Underage football does not mean anything!, Donal Curtis never played underage with the county either did Peadar Byrne. Underage football should be reduced, its not helpin Meath football. Hopefully this years Meath minors will answer the call in the future.

rocknroyal,
on the contrary, I disagree, the underage county teams are very important for me as they provide youg players with inter county experience, as well as playing against the best players at their age group will help them to improve and mature as players which will help Meath football in the long run.
However, I feel that they shouldn't get as much gear as they do as players then only get on the county team as they get the bag shorts socks etc

donal curtis did play underage with meath.played minor in 1991. when dublin beat us in a leinster minor replay in walterstown and as someone has already said minor football does matter. how do u think every other county apart from ourselves is throwing out group after group of talented footballers.they dont just appear at 20 odd.

James T interesting topic, one big name who never played minor and it was the last year Meath won the All-Ireland minor was Nigel Nestor in 92, while his brother was a sub. That team inclued Giles,Brendan Murphy,Paul Shankey, John Brady,Neville Dunne with Ollie Murphy on the bench,so you do need successful minor teams to get success in later years.

Another name who I think never played underage is Moyles, not 100% sure on that.
Curtis was on the minor team of 91.
Evan Kelly all-star 99!!!also neve played minor, played under 21 alright.
