Croke Park is sold out just three or four times a year, fair enough. But the GAA should be doing something about getting more in to those 60,000 crowd games I reckon. There aren't many 60,000 games either. Players love to play in Croke Park. Trains and buses stop within a kickout from the door. All roads, trains, buses and planes lead to the capital.Handy enough to get there.
If the GAA want to build a 60,000 capacity stadium they should put it in Athlone, accessible by rail from east and west and by bus from all sides. To make ut viable I think they need to team up with the FAI, IRFU, other sporting organisations, have an Olympic size pool, top athletics, boxing facilities, a top media centre and some good backers, probably one with their name on the stadium and other decent sponsors. Could be home ground for Westmeath, Athlone Town and Bucaneers. One that might sometime pay for itself rather than ve used for just 3 or 4 fiitball or hurling games per year. Optimistic I know but better thinking Super Bowl than Bertie Bowl.

If the largest stadium for some stupid reason is not an option. Logic would be to use the second largest, that being Thurles. End of.

Irelands top of the range indoor run track is in Athlone and it could be combined with Athlone IT. Combining with all sporting organisations would be good but who would do it?

1641785 its not a new stadium they need its a new fixture maker. somebody must have been half awake when they decided to pencil in an american football match the day before an all ireland football semi final in the first place!!!! you have less than 24 hours turn around to allow a pitch to recover from a sport never played there with posts been erected on the actual pitch and differant markings and what have you. then they dont even plan for a draw in the other all ireland semi final. surely you would have imagined after 2 years ago when the kilkenny v galway all ireland hurling final finished a draw and they had the debacle of forcing the womens final to be moved from its calendar date to accomodate the hurling replay that they would have at the start of each year have all angles covered regarding replays
exactly hill16man.. you hit the nail on the head there. There are people making decisions at the top level in the GAA and they need their heads examined. "OMG a replay we never thought of that" !! unbelievable.

From someone who travels to every corner of the country with work Athlone would probably make the most sense. A purpose built stadium with ample access etc.
