"Gooch a two trick pony"

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I don't see what the big deal to be honest....... He made a statement for whatever reason, probably to grab the attention he has got for it.......... He has apologised today for it, i can't remember that other Kerry great that is pat Spillane apologise for the slating he has given plenty of other non Kerry players down through the years....... It's a bit rich that Kerry are up in arms about this when their prodigal son has been at it for years.......... It's called punditry lads and these lads scrapping to be in the headlines......

What a load of rubbish from Martin. Martin was a great player, but he will never live this statement down. Nonsense from a former player with a solitary All Ireland in his pocket coming from a County with two All Ireland wins in the whole history of the G.A.A. Martin sounds like the Clare management after their All Ireland win of 1997.They had won their second title in a hundred years and pontificated on all things hurling, including the next decade of Clare dominating hurling!!

I dont see where the amount of All Irelands won has anything to do with the outlandish comment he made.Whether a person had 10 medals or none, the comment is preposterous.

Right - so now we have Spillane responding to McHugh's remark with an even sillier remark. Considering the number of gifted players who have played for Kerry down the years, it's meaningless to single out Gooch as the best of them all; each decade has had it's own stars and football has changed from one decade to another. Why concentrate on forwards only? Some of the greatest players of all time were mid-fielders or backs; and some of the truly great players came from the so-called weaker counties. They didn't have a high quality team around them to give them good ball, they had to do it all themselves. That's like greatness to me anyway.

Nearly as silly as McHugh's remark.

Don't see what all the fuss is about.
He made a stupid remark on live tv. He's admitted as much today.

You'd think he criticized Colm Mc Fadden the way some people are going on

Firstly, I disagree with Martin McHugh. However, no matter how mad his views are he is still entitled to them. I rather hear honest opinion than play it day bland coverage.

Even if Cooper was a two trick pony, making and taking scores are two fairly useful tricks for a forward to have.

Martin was way off the mark in how he articulated his point. I think his point was that O'Donohoe has a more rounded game to Cooper - he is physically bigger for one.

But even then - Cooper is a class apart and it will take 5/6 years minimum before the 2 can be compared.

Colm Cooper will always go down as one of the greatest ever Kerry and All Ireland footballers, in time he will attain legend status like Paddy Bawn Brosnan, Joe Keohane, Seán Murphy, Mick O'Connell, Jack O'Shea, Maurice Fitzgerald, Seamus Moynihan etc., etc.

James O'Donoghue has the potential to join the exclusive club that confers on its membership legendary status in Kerry. I hope he does and believe he will. However he will attain this status on his own merits and not at the expense of any of his predecessors who will always retain their legendary status in their own right.

For McHugh by implication of a comparison to suggest otherwise shows how little he knows of the culture, the tradition and the psyche of Kerry people when it comes to their gaelic football heritage and their definitions of greatness as achieved on the field of play.

I genuinely feel McHugh should apologise live on air and with great humility to both Colm Cooper and to James O'Donoghue for his ill uttered comments and indeed he should apologie to all Kerry football supporters for his utterances.

Jaysus Dingle, I'll have to search out your other 35 posts if they are all as entertaining as this.

You wouldn't happen to have them on you?

Whatever about M McHugh and the Gooch this thing about the best ever is ridiculous I saw the following players play:::: Sean o'Neill (Down) Paddy Doherty (Down) Sean o Connol (Derry)Ger Power and M Sheehy (Kerry) Matt Connor( Offally) Frank mcGuigan P Canavan and S o Neill (all Tyrone) P Joyce Galway K McDonald (Mayo) and too many great Dublin forwards to name over the years. Now to pick a forward line from even those mentioned above who would leave out.
Would you not have Power and Sheehy on any team and what about P Canavan/F mcGuigan /Sean oNeill for No 14. Where would you put M Connor. What about Dublin/ Meath forwards over the last 30 years.
Now I'm going back a long time but Sean o Neill was IMO the best And all the ones Iv named, at their best were as good as any.

Ye Dingle , mc Hugh should be made run through Killarney ringing a bell asking for forgiveness for this blasphemy about one of the Kerry Giants, who are are only equalled in folklore by Cuchulainn, Fionn mac Cumhaill and the Fianna.

Get a grip ffs.

Stupid remark, shouldn't be on RTE, brings nothing to the discussions.

Can you name me one who does in that case arock.

Alright, he made a stupid comment that he was man enough to acknowledge later on, which of the current panel have ever had the balls to retract a statement after one of their regular character assasinations?

The phrase "one-trick pony". It means someone who has been taught to do only a very limited range of things. Someone who perhaps is not very clever. Literally, a pony that has been taught to do a trick - something to amuse people. They can do that one thing but not much else.
The phrase "two-trick pony". It means that in addition to the above, in the Gooch's case that he is sidelined due to Injury and therefore is unable to the effect the games outcome by not being on the field of play. Which is also not very Clever.
What a brilliant Analysis by Martin McHugh here. Cant wait to see the one-trick pony back in action and amusing some Donegal fans in Croker. See to remember it was a Mayo Club Sandwich which caused the Injury and they are next to face Kerry with JOD & CO. Interesting

McHugh just likes saying things to be controversial. He is very inconsistent. He was on last year's SG panel for Dublin v Kerry and declared that Gooch's first half performance was the best he had ever seen from a player-check it out on Youtube. A year later he is calling him a 'two trick pony". Someone should point that out to him.
