Back page of Irish Times sports supplement today; big headlines about Rory being Sportsperson of the year (justified), then more about BOD's Hall of Fame, then Joe Schmidt getting Manager of the Year. Wait, no mention of the Team of the Year, wonder why? If Cork Ladies football team want recognition in the Irish Times, they'll need to win the Leinster schools rugby cup

It is amusing that the winner of team of the year (the only award voted on by the public) should be a gaelic sports team who don't get a single minute of live coverage on the national broadcaster TV. There can not be many countries in the world where this type of thing could happen.

Fantastic achievement alright. Full credit to TG4 for actually making the effort to show the ladies football, imagine how popular a team they could be if the main broadcaster saw fit to promote one of the biggest sporting organisations in the country?

As for knockon.ie, I wouldn't read too much into anything printed on that website. Even ormo has claimed to have articles printed on there in the past...

Not a mention of the Tipp SFC final on the 9 o'clock news. Not a dickie bird. Wouldn't have taken 10 seconds to dispense with it.

Very strange alright when you consider the fact that a football relegation playoff in Tipp was deemed worth of headline news on the RTE website. Of course though the pitch being unplayable was apparently of interest to the whole country.

Spot on - and the irony was surely lost on them, really ridiculous.

Ormond Niamh Briggs was nominated for sport person of the year, why would the Irish women team be nominated when the won nothing, every other team nominated won there main competition. There has been plenty of gaa matches the last 2 weekends and county teams, collage teams and some club teams are back training. If in doubt you are spot on about ladies football.

There is an argument to be made for a dedicated Irish sports channel, funding can come many ways, directly and indirectly. But I recall in the early days of Setanta, showing Feile na Gael and Peile, they showed schools games including Bunscoil and 2nd level, showing school hockey, in fact all things schools sports. For minimal cost, until they started showing Poker etc. But the point is there is always some sport. We have Katie Taylor bemoaning RTE's lack of coverage of Boxing, you have athletics, Basketball, schools rugby, in fact all schools sports its a huge untapped area. All you need is sponsorship and showing schools sports at a time for a very young audience, then later with adult games roundups/reviews later on. The point is RTE is just way too limited, its a famine or a feats, like showing Wall-to-wall golf over a weekend - this actually drives their main audience away to different channels. A bit of a rethink either RTE or some other channel.

it would certainly be great to see, but Setanta was on the bring of financial ruin a few years ago. I don't think there would be enough backing to make it financially viable - and that's going to be the driving force at the end of the day.

not always. There is no where that states one must have won a competition/trophy/event to win an award like being discussed here...

I suppose in fairness to RTE they have to cover a lot of sport in an era where you can see all sorts of sports live. Unfortunately, however, they are totally obsessed with English soccer. To extent that the Lexus chase radio broadcast on Stephens Day was interrupted twice to give updates - not even score updates! - from two English soccer games. That is just absurd. That would be like BBC radio interrupting the King George to tell you about a substitution at Bayern Munich!

Lads,we should set up a weekly betting thread.Hill and hurlingdub ye seem to be well up on the horses.I have no interest in them to be honest, but im a very keen gambler on the football and GAA.From Jan 1st - Dec 31st i keep an account of every single bet i do.And have done for last 5 years.Whether its the horses or football its not easy to make a profit, but with a lot of reasearch and patience it can be done.
