The Garth Brooks Fiasco

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Naysayer, the congestion and parking problems in Belfast city centre are caused by irresponsible, selfish culchies driving up to the city in single occupant cars and who park where they want because they won't pay for car parks. The Garth Brooks fiasco was caused by Brooks, the promotor and GAA arrogantly expecting residents to roll over and take any old nonsense thrown at them. They didn't consult previous agreed procedures and money and greed blinded them to everything else. It's a right old mess and it is already affecting the tourist industry's reputation in the South. On the airwaves and in the papers I keep hearing people from the North and UK who have bought tickets openly stating they won't go back to the South if the concerts are cancelled and they lose money.

We look pathetic around the world over this.

There are people losing out massively on hotel room bookings, and this will not bring them back to the country.

All because the gaa went ahead and didnt consult the residents? I am not sure of the specifics, but it looks that way.

I can only say that the residents should pull in their horns on this one, for the last time, as there is so much to be lost over it. I think that the gaa should really look after them this time. More than half a million. 4 million would be more like it.

Anyone who commutes in to the city from culchieland that I know doesn't have any problem parking Ulsterman, plenty of spaces around the markets and up towards the University area - the problem seems to be with those who live in the City and think that the piece of road outside their house is there solely for them to park at. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way and anyone has the right to park in a space which presents itself and is a valid parking space. The only ones who are doing anything wrong are those who reside in the areas who go out and vandalise the property of people who are legally parked.

Does the agreement that CP broke say 3 events or 3 dates?
Would CP be saying the One Direction concerts in May was "one" event, Garth Brooks 5 dates a "second" event?

I cant see this being resolved. There is no way there will be a uturn on the decision because of the legal ramifications from it., ie the law will not become law anymore, one set of rules for a certain situation and black and white rules for anything else. That is the real issue.

Unfortunately, there are people who go to concerts who dont behave, likewise, football and hurling matches. Although I am convinced it is not as bad as it used to be. People have a lot more cop on now when they go out for a day than in the past.

€50 million down the swanee...

Absolute madness with the state of the economy...

Hope certain people are pleased with themselves and their crusade....

About 900 locals marched on Sunday around Croke Park to have all 5 go ahead.

Exactly how many residence groups are there in that area anyway....

So, going by the article, it looks like they were cancelled because the performer in question wouldn't perform at all if he wasn't allowed to do all 5 dates (3 concerts would still have been able to go ahead). Seems a bit ridiculous.

Well this big mess is over for now, can't really say I give a toss about Garth Brooks, if he was playing in my front garden I'd pull the curtains but I do feel sorry for the 400,000 people who bought tickets, apparently 70,000 of which were overseas fans, but I suppose the 'subject to approval' bit can't be ignored, it isn't printed for fun.

Hard to believe it actually got cancelled though (probably Brooks throwing his toys out of the pram), I know a deal is a deal and 5 concerts really was pushing it but limiting the Gaa to 3 concerts a year is a farce anyway, it's a huge stadium which can generate huge revenue for this country. How many residents actually opposed the 5 nights anyway? I heard plenty of the residents actually wanted them to go ahead, seems a bit strange that a few hundred people (probably) can ruin a few nights out for 400,000 people.

Sorry for being a tad biased but we had a few disgruntled residents in our area when Witnness was going ahead but they only represented a minority of people and I'm sorry but it has to be said a few of them are known trouble makers. Now I'm NOT saying that this is the case with the Croke Park residents who were against the concerts but it certainly was the case in the our area.
