The Garth Brooks Fiasco

Keep it simple

5 concerts in a row is over the top

There was an agreement in place that was broken

The GAA knew this and still went ahead without contacting various resident groups

This is on the back of a very hostile relationship that already existed with some residents

The correct decision was made to award 3 concerts

The opportunity to play in front of 3 sell out audiences was dismissed by Brooks

Garth Brooks rather questionably demands 5 concerts (More than likely to make up for massive staging costs and keep the show in profit)

Hillman have you something against line dancing or did you not get a ticket, do the calculations if all 5 go ahead and each person spends on average 100 euro that's 40 million at least but like you said the Yanks coming in and the European fans will probably bring their own sandwiches with them......good point

how can you possibly know somebody will spend 100 euro each in the croke park area?
most people will bring their own alcohol with them
bring their own food in the backpack too
if the country has 100 each to spend on a day out at concerts we wouldnt be in an economy problem as it is
Simple use of maths and economics helps bring it to be known that people will spend circa 100 euro on day of concerts. Most people will not be bringing their own food and booze with them.

Hmmm, Been thinking a bit about this a bit. I have not read every post on this thread so it may have come up already, but what is the stance of the residents regarding replays of games?? I mean, if we had a repeat of the Dublin v Meath matches where it took 4 games to find a winner? And lets say it happened in hurling too, in the same year? Would the injunctions be flying then?
Would the games be cancelled? Would Garth intervene or maybe president Obama would step in to talk to the residents?
Just sayin like!!!
Matches are the primary use of the stadium and completely different to concerts.

I have been going to Croker for years, and in all my time attending games and concerts I have never seen anyone urinating in the gardens of Ballybough. Has anyone else ever actually witnessed this taking place?

Dubfan, the GAA don't need a licence to have matches, unlike the promoters who need a licence to hold concerts in Croker. So if there's replays the residents have to put up with it. But they probably get free tickets too ?

Good insight in to the life of a Dublin fan though Hill.

Still can't believe some of the nonsense written up here on this. Same usual posters who would argue against every Dublin poster making comments about the residents, people they have never met, people with shoes they have never walked in.

If one resident chooses to appeal the concerts, it is well within their rights. They live in the area and there has been an agreement for three concerts a year. The GAA chose to neglect dialogue with the residents and tried push ahead with extra concerts knowing that some residents were against this. The residents objected to this and appealed to the necessary bodies. The residents have been portrayed as greedy, self centred and egotistical. It is disgraceful they have been demonised in this way.

All talk of lost money, reputation worldwide etc has been exaggerated beyond belief.

Snuffy is right about this, economics shouldn't determine whether an event goes ahead. Citizens have rights, and in a democracy they can challenge decisions and let their voice be heard.

This is something most posters who are saying "screw the residents" forget.

The GAA saw money, Aiken saw money and Garth saw dollar signs! The GAA failed to consult the residents, and now they have egg on their face.

'Justice is blind'...hence the blindfold over her eyes! (Big business or weight of numbers does not hold more power over any single individual in her eyes)!
'Scales of Justice'...she holds a scales in balance to show that all are equal before the law and that she is 'fair and reasonable' to all!
'Sword in Hand'...she will defend the rights of 'ALL' (Big business, residents committees or one single INDIVIDUAL)!

Ah if only it were this simple. As updwell has already pointed out we have murders, rapists, dodgy politicians and corrupt bankers laughing at Irish law every day of the week.

Also Snuf I think the fact that you have to keep telling us how smart you are suggests that you may be confusing ego and intellect.

In the interest of all the Croke Park communities we are prepared to consider a new direction with a view to facilitating the holding of the Garth Brooks concerts.

I wonder why they've changed their minds......must be out of the kindness of their hearts

God could you imagine if those residents lived up here and had to put up with any of the 6,000 odd marches passing through their area or near their houses whether or not they wanted them to, and all the associated disruption every marching season. They don't know how easy they have it having to put up with Garth for 5 nights.

Yep unfortunately. If you're ever round Croker early take a stroll down to Mountjoy Sq as the buses arrive from the country for big game full of people who have been drinking all the way up. Not a pretty sight!

He's just said he still wants to play but its still 5 shows or no show. He also said that whatever sadness the Irish people are feeling, its only one billionth what he's feeling. He's feeling like the biggest loser out of all this!! Unbelievable stuff!!

Yes and if you ever walk through Ballybough, down Clonliffe Road or through Fairview you will see plenty of Dubs relieving themselves having not bothered to go in the pub they just left from the night before, not a pretty sight either, don't tar the country folk with that allegation
