Yes, but if those 400,000 unemployed people were all told they had a job lined up for them then a few weeks before were told "actually we never really had all premesis for all those jobs and now that we told the companies who were coming in to set up they have decided not to come at all so you are still unemployed" then there would be a hell of a fuss I would imagine.

Has the mass hysteria hit the stage where we're equating a concert being cancelled with losing a job/long-term unemployment?

yes yes yes yes but ormond
that money is hypotetichal it doesnt exist
its like saying if my horse wins i will have x amount but he has to actualy run first
buisnesses didnt lose money because it would only be money they might have made
where as if the people who both the tickets werent getting there money back for it
now they would have lost money

I love this example but in actually fact its like you bet on your horse in a 1 horse race. So its guaranteed money. But then some silly person who had nothing better to do broke both horses legs

Exactly witnof, what residents were rode roughshod?! I live in the area and was never asked about lodging an objection.
300 residents out of approximately 27,000 that live in the immediate vicinity of the stadium. (Make that 299 as one of them lives in Castleknock)

Offside rule

One big difference being the fact that the people who bought the tickets get their money back whereas the unemployed wouldn't get a cent

Fair enough witnof, I should rephrase that as "some residents" in the interests of impartiality.

wwfan....my mate claims that the objectors are either professional ones (the type that would moan about anything) or those that just hate the GAA and would have it banned altogether and the rest think they can get something financial out of it all.

SNUF and the others making out that the residents are some homogenious are only adding to the hot all.

SNUF and the others saying the residents all united against this and its some giant crusade to win back a morale un-corrupt Ireland have been smoking something funny.

As stated before. ALL sides EQUAL blame.

Destruction

Haha that would be my luck alright
But seriously these figures of 50 million is ridiculous as howcan aanybody possibly know how many people will drink alcohol at the venue or a pub or not drink alcohol.
Likewise with food what if central or SuperValu
Did special deals and half the people bought their sandwiches going that day in their local shops
The estimates are so far fetched

Putting aside the impact on the residents and business the the GAA comes out of this very badly. This and the SKY deal farce shows an organisation who talks so much about the principles of amateurism and volunteering but whose actions show that what drives many decisions is maximising profits. Once again the volunteer has to listen to the grab all sneers due to the decisions of some business or promotion managers. Hopefully a change at the top will see those who do actually put volunteers and our games before profit back making decisions.

What gets me about this whole thing is, its an excuse for Irish people, who don't seem to like Ireland very much, to just hurl hysterical abuse, without any sense of perspective.

"Typical Ireland","banana republic", "we've disgraced ourselves again" etc. Well, no. This doesn't make Ireland a banana republic, and we haven't disgraced ourselves. A faded Country Star, who hasn't really been "relevant" since the mid-90's sold out Croke Park for a summer date. Ok, great, he still has fans here, no sweat. Demand grew, 1 turned into 2, 2 turned into 3. Wow, no-one saw that coming, Garth Brooks must be over the moon.
Then 3 turned to 4, then turned to 5. Ok that was a bit crazy. Licensing issues meant final 2 concerts could not go ahead in CP. Ok, the licensing of the whole thing and co-ordination between parties concerned was poor.

But THREE of the 5 concerts could still have gone ahead. THREE sold out stadium concerts approved. A reformed Led Zeppelin would have been happy with that. Its more than the artist in question could have dreamed of before anything was announced. But HE pulled the plug on all the concerts. The doesn't make Ireland a banana republic, that doesn't mean WE'VE disgraced ourselves. And that certainly didn't damage our "international reputation" (that old chestnut).

That guy turned his nose up at 3 sold out nights in a huge stadium. Thats on him, not us.

Ye you're right, I don't know where this trite nonsense comes from or how it's even relevant to the debate in any way.

He's still looking for 5 concerts because apparently "I cannot begin to tell you how badly my heart is breaking right now" and "To tell 160,000 people they are not welcome would be a nightmare".

Pass me the sick bucket please Garth, we know it's about the money, anyway it's 3 concerts and that's it, otherwise you're telling 400,000 fans that they're not welcome nevermind 160,000.

400,000 concert goers devastated, local residents in Ballybough lose out on the chance to get a bit of work, small business who would have made a few bob out of pocket, and the reputation of Ireland as a place for headline acts to stage concerts tarnished, all because a couple of hundred whinging residents couldn't bear to see people enjoying themselves. Well done Dublin City Council.
