I don't think there's much of an obsession to be honest, our games are out there for a much larger audience to see and it's only natural to be curious about what new viewers (regardless of where they're from) make of them, that's all really.

Agree 100%. If the games were screened in the US the same people complaining here would be all over the media, curious about reactions, but because it's the Brits it's seen as a lust for 'acceptance' by the Paddies. For years we've been banging on about how great our games are and looking for an international stage for them. Now that we get that it seems that some people don't want us to be curious about the reaction, which then surely defeats the purpose. Bizarre!

What are you talking about? The games have been getting unexpected exposure in the US over the last few years, plenty of news stories on local network affiliates about it, and about Americans setting up hurling clubs all across the country. That's gotten no coverage in the media back home, much to my surprise, and hardly anyone at home seems to care one way or the other.

I'm on about prime time sports channels screening live GAA matches to much fanfare just like SKY are doing in the UK. What did you think I was talking about? Last I checked none of the big US sports networks like, ESPN, CBS Sports Network, Fox, Big Ten etc. were screening live GAA matches. Have I missed something?

Interesting post and agree with many of the insightful comments here.

Something that really makes me cringe every summer without fail is overhearing someone talking about how they brought a foreign visitor to Croke Park/watched a match [usually hurling] on tv and how much their guest 'marvelled at the game', 'couldn't believe they were amateurs', 'couldn't believe the game wasn't internationally famous' etc etc. Just make me want to puke for some reason!

We should be comfortbale enough in our knowledge that we have 2 of the best games in the world indiginous to Ireland
but we seem to crave the ol pat on the head from the bigger boys to tell us how great we are all the same

Sad
