Counties your county never played

Someone told me that Dublin played Antrim footballers in league play off in the 70s, but I don't remember that one. Quite posible as there used to be quarter finals between all of the divisions back then and there were some unusal pairings. I remember being in Breffni Park in 1976 or 1977 to see Dublin play Cavan in quarter final or semi final. I think only time they played since was in league 6/7 years ago? Would be 100% certain they never played Waterford in football.

Monaghan could have played every county in the last 3 years alone after going from 1 to 3 and back to 1 in the last couple of leagues!

We played them in the league in Walsh Park in 2004.

Normally I have a statto brain for these kinds of thing but I have to say I have no memory of this at all. Very strange. Who wore what jerseys I wonder...

It is hard to say as I can't find any league fixtures online from before 2007.

I don't recall any Leitrim, Tipperary, Waterford or Clare games, I started following in 1999, was young so I could be wrong.

From Carlow so we would via lower football league/qualifiers etc & various hurling leagues played most teams. But I can't remember ever playing Tyrone in either code, say they'd be the only one.

Off the top of my head I can recall our footballers playing everyone bar Kilkenny, Waterford, Carlow and Roscommon. I have a feeling they may have played the latter two during the division 3 days though, so I welcome any forthcoming corrections.

There were a few years in the early 2000s where Mayo met Limerick, Tipp and Cavan in the qualifiers, winning narrowly on each occasion. Can't ever remember playing Antrim, Carlow, Waterford, Louth or Wicklow. We rarely play Armagh either, think they beat us in a league semi in 2008, maybe we beat them up in Armagh in the league a couple of years ago, but that's about it.

Yes hillman, a cold wet Saturday night! Great town though and great crack afterwards. Only other time I'd been in Breffni was way back in 70s and myself and brother ended up in bed for a bed afterwards after a dodgy burger!

mod/gleebo - Louth v Mayo
We played you several times in NFL in the 80s & 90s. I remember one particular game in Mayo being switch several times due to waterlogged pitches. Twas very funny to see a trail of buses and cars full of players and supporters winding from one venue to the next. Think we eventually settled on a pitch after two previous inspections. And that was before the advent of the mobile phone. Recall beating you in Castlebar & Drogheda around 95 & 96 when you were quite strong. Louth were a very solid league side under Paul Kenny in the mid 90s and actually won promotion to NFL Division One. But Croke Park reconfigurated the league structures the following year. Also remember you beating us in Dundalk in the late 80s when TJ Kilgallon picked up a nasty knee injury and a win in Crossmolina in the early 80s that secured a promotion for us.
The last time we met in championship football was the 1950 final. My father tells me that you only won by a flukey goal in the final minutes from a blockdown - 2-05 to 1-06. But we forgave you as Mayo provided two great players for Louths win in 1957. Dan O'Neill and Seamie O'Donnell.

Probably not relevant Hurling Dub,
But in 1968 the Dubs played in a tournament against Down and then Antrim in Casement park,(stayed in Europa hotel afterwards) Down were playing Kerry in the AllIreland final that year and requested a game and we duly obliged . Down bet Kerry in the AllIreland final that year.

Did a bit of research re Mayo. Mayo played Louth loads of times and Mayo usually lost 11-2-1990 Crossmolina Mayo 0:9 Louth 1-11 (McStay 1 point) Mayo 1-4 Louth 1-8 30-10-94 and the match I attended in Drogheda Louth 1-11 Mayo 2-7. Played Antrim a few times too e.g. 24-2-91 Mayo 1-10 Antrim 1-6 (Crossmolina) Antrim 0-7 Mayo 1-6; Mayo also played Wicklow in Aughrim 29-11-92 Wicklow 1-7 Mayo 1-11; Armagh played loads of times too. Another I attended was Killkenny 1-5 Mayo 2-17 in Nowlan Pk on 16-11-97 (I thought it was much closer) I do remember there being some club hurling match preceeding the football and once the club match was over the gates opened and most of the crowd exited. You could have walked in to see the county football match for free!!!

Good one Áth Cliath! They did play Antrim in the league Division Two in 1974. Kilkenny must have been handy enough around then if they were Division Two.
