Predictability of the football championship

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Was just sitting and thinking about the football results so far, although its very early days, I cant help but feel its going to be predictable all the way through.

Tyrone ran amuck against Down in Omagh before inexplicably allowing Down back into it, Down blew their chance, game was drawn but in the replay Tyrone where never going to be beat.

Donegal despite losing at half time against Derry, Still got their predictable result in the end.

Roscommon wiped the floor with Leitrim out west

And last years fairytale story was London, They've been brought back down to planet earth with a bang already this year having been destroyed by Galway.

I cant see where there is going to be a shock lads. Can you's ?

be foolish to believe that
sure we here home advantage is the be all and end all
yet louth went to westmeath and won
depite westmeath being division 1 and louth divison 2 this year
down went to omagh and nearly beat tyrone then got easily beat at home
donegal went to celtic park and beat derry
seems the home advantage malarky is being put to bed early
so to could any talk of predictability
roscommon do mayo in the semi final in connacht and the media will class the chmapionship blown wide open

Wayno if the first minute penalty goes in for Down in the replay
the replay would have been a different match.

It would have given Down a massive lift.Nothing is clear cut in sport
-look how many upsets there have been accross all sports down the
years.

Quarter finals is where I think we'll see the upsets. That and possibly in the qualifiers where this new format has the potential for a few sides to get caught out.

Well alot of money would have been lost on the first game being a draw up north , so that wasnt overly predictable , but agree we have not had the big marquee defeat as of yet , more likely to get it in the hurling me thinks than the football , but we can live in hope as long as its not us .

Agree with you here. Your examples though are not great. It would not have been a major 'shock' if Derry had won on Sunday (in my opinion I should add). Louth beating Westmeath, for me, was also not a 'shock'...the kind of things that we should be looking out for in terms of a shocks are, Fermanagh reaching the All-Ireland semi final, Westmeath beating Dublin in the first round and then winning Leinster, Limerick beating Cork and then drawing with Kerry (when they should have won) (2003), Longford beating Mayo in the qualifiers...these are 'shocks'..I don't see these coming

A shock wouldn't be a shock if it's expected!

a shock in hurling would have to come as laois beating galway
waterford drawing with cork is the closest you will get
as there are 7 or 8 teams all operating on the same level now with no stadouts

The football championship has become predictable, the strong counties have got stronger. You could probably predict most of the quarter-finalists already: Kerry, Cork, Dublin, Mayo, Tyrone etc

Down came very close to one. And were Derry not the favorites against Donegal?
Out of interest, does anyone know if Monaghan or Tyrone will be favorites in the Ulster QF? There is still 4 or 5 teams that could win the Ulster title yet.

Louth are 3/1 to beat Kildare, possible upset on the cards their maybe?

Derry were favorites against Donegal. Westmeath were also favorites against Louth and Tyrone were favourites to beat Down the first day and only drew. I suppose a real shock would be Dublin,Cork,Kerry not reaching this years All Ireland semi final? or Kildare,Galway wining leinster,Connacht.

At this stage in Ulster the only possible shock would be Fermanagh or Antrim shocking Donegal and to a much lesser extent the winner of Armagh and Cavan beating the winner of Monaghan and Tyrone. In reality Fermanagh or Antrim have no chance of beating Donegal. Can't see any shocks in any of the other provinces. In terms of Tyrone v Monaghan game, I would expect Tyrone to start as slight favourites with the likely non involvement of McManus. Wouldn't be a shock if either team won, only if a hammering was dealt out.

I don't know if this guy Wayno is watching the same championship as me. Derry were marginal favorites in their game with Donegal as were Westmeath. Both lost. Nobody predicted a draw between Tyrone and Down.

So what Wayno were you hoping London would beat Galway or Leitrim would beat Roscommon?

What exactly would be a shock? Kilkenny footballers beating Dublin?

The football championship is thoroughly predictable. Gavin's galácticos are going to annihilate Laois, then Meath, and every other team in the country.
