Monaghan vs Tyrone

Soccer in midfield is almost a walking game with a lot less upper body contact, I wouldn't compare them.

WestKerry, in fairness he's had a torrid time with injuries as well. Wasn't his best game either way though.

Congratulations to Monaghan, thoroughly deserved their victory. More desire, more organisation. Tyrone were extremely poor mostly due to Monaghan's pressure and tackling but a lot of enforced errors as well.

Wasn't impressed one bit with Kinsella as referee. On a number of occasions for both teams but especially prior to the Monaghan goal players were tackled when trying to lift the ball. This is a foul and generally this is a yellow card offence. We then had the goalscorer taking 9 steps before the goal.

The black card phase was ridiculous. McCurry not only was fouled but was doubly punished by being black carded for a trip which no-one but the ref seems to have seen. Cavanagh's was a cert black card, Hughes fouled Cavanagh but Cavanagh pulled his arm as well so a very poor decision.

With regards to injury time, 2 minutes was absolutely ridiculous. Clerkin down injured, Wylie down injured, Cavanagh down injured. Finlay free overturned for timewasting. At least 4 minutes in my view. However, if the ref wanted to blow the game up when he did, why give the throw ball? Just blow it up or if not be prepared to let the team that wins it finish the attack. I can understand why Harte was annoyed with this, however, he should be more worried about his teams overall performance than the referees interpretation of additional time.

Tyrone were lifeless for large parts of the game. McGinley and Peter Harte were completely anonymous. Conan Grugan's lack of game time showed and as for the forward line, with the exception of McCurry and Cavanagh in the last 10 minutes, completely inept. S O'Neill should have been called ashore at half time. R O'Neill don't think got 2 balls played into him the whole time he was on and the odd one that did come in had snow on them. One point defeat masks the severe shortcomings in this team that Kerry, Dublin and Down in the first game exposed. Not one goal chance created and 5-6 conceded. 5-6 points would not have flattered Monaghan. Maybe it,s time Tyrone took stock of things as a whole. I would suggest that Tyrone are hanging grimly to being a top 8 team by their fingertips but an absolute mile off the top 4-5.

Yes, nothing wrong with his pre-free kick routine, if it's against the rules, it should be clarified!

That's true MichaelO he has been blighted with injury.

Realdub ok well Dick Clerkin / Alan Brogan for example are still going strong.

Either way it's a shame to see such a good player playing so poorly

Yes westkerry, there are always exceptions to the rule, Brogan for instance is an amazing athlete, and footballer.

I was a huge O'Neill fan during the noughties, and you're right, it is a shame!

It's unfair to judge any forward on a game against this Monaghan defence, they are ferocious and play with a ridiculous intensity. They will make any attack in the country look blunted without doubt. Wylie, Walshe, Mone, Corey are fearsome tacklers. Bit like judging Diarmaid Connelly on how he played against Donegal in 2011.

Time and time again Tyrone spilled possession or gave the ball away with poor passes. Monaghan lost their nerve after going 5 points up. Tyrone almost got an equaliser. Overall Monaghan were the better team and were excellent defensively.

Your right Benjyyy, that defence is quality. Drew Wylie is top notch. I would say though that O'Neill was well off the pace last year as well which is understandable considering the injuries he's suffered. I think he'll probably will retire this year.

Meath Carlow game is so bad there's now a streaker on the field swinging off the crossbar. I'm not even joking.

Unfortunately Mickey might be as well off doing the same. I think everything is starting to take it's toll on him now and he's not looking the better for it, huge respect for the man and would hate to see him crash and burn!

Couldn't agree more realdub. He used to keep his cool very well but stress is really starting to show. He's one of the greatest tacticians ever and just a brilliant manager overall so I don't like to see things turning sour for him. I hope he walks away

A tough match alright. End scenes will dominate news unfortunately. The football forgotten and it's all doom and gloom for football again.
Drew wylie is top notch. Monaghan ferocious in the tackle. Like against donegal last year I think they mentally broke Tyrone. Credit to Tyrone too because they could have given up when 5 down and kept it up to the bitter end. Only thing they are missing is a top class forward that will get 5/6 points a game like Canavan or a young Stephen o neill. Tyrone will still make 1/4's IMO. Too good not to.

I questioned this practice before, Oisín McConville used to do it all the time. The rule as far as I know is when the ball is kicked with the boot/foot it is therefore in play. Nobody has ever challenged a player when he does it though which is quite amazing really.

Fantastic win today! Went to the wire as you'd expect, we should have been out of sight in truth but didn't take our chances and Tyrone always fight to the end, it's a massive weight off our shoulders to beat Tyrone after so long.

The defence was exceptional as a few have said, but one player I didn't see mentioned was Fintan Kelly, exceptional both in defence and on the counter, scoring 2 points. One of the most improved players this year from any county I would say.

Also special mention must go to Conor McManus. It's been well publicised this week the lengths to which he went to be available for this game, going to various parts of the country trying different methods of recovery on the chance they would be the difference. Well he made it back and doesn't appear to be any the worse for it after the game. Yes, he looked rusty and off the pace in general play, and the fresh, youthful legs of someone like McCarron may have been quicker on the pitch in open play today. But in a tight game like this every score counts, and McManus was flawless from frees which was a big factor in us getting over the line. Another two weeks now for him to get the fitness up further after a job well done today.
