Tyrone v Down

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

My god what a game at the end! en route to Quinn's corner for a big feed. Don't think I've ever lost the head (or voice) so much at a match before. To be honest standard of football wasn't up there but I reckon the intensity and standard will be upped for the replay. See you Tyrone boyos in Newry next week - Benny's gonna get ya ;)

awful first half from both sides
tyrone should have been about 10 v 01 up at one stage the chances and possesion they had
it took the second tyrone goal to wake down up and they then kicked 2-03 without reply
but I looked at the clock when down had that free in as injury time was just about to start
and seen plenty of tyrone supporters leaving the ground and thaught to myself
I wouldnt be leaving if I was a tyrone supporter
as with 4 mins of added time
he duly missed the free
tyrone went up the other end got the point then cavanagh kicks equaliser

1589401 One thing we learned today is that Tyrone have no chance of winning Sam.

You could be right, but I wouldn't make my judgement on todays match. remember 2009 Cork hammered Kerry by 8 points in Munster Championship, Kerry then only beat Longford by a few points and then were very poor in beating Sligo by 1 point. after watching the Kerry v Sligo game not many would of seen them lifting Sam, but they then hammered us in the quarters on their way to winning Sam. Bottom line is Tyrone didn't lose today and are well able to perform in big games so I would never write them off.

Usual histrionics from Kavanagh today. He was rolling about squealing in supposed agony when Laverty barely touched him. 10 seconds later when he succeeded in getting the Down man the yellow card he is up taking the free and nothing wrong with him. He also dived to get the last free. He's been doing this his whole career but Brolly is the only one brave enough to call it. I am not disputing his football ability.

2nd year in a row that Morgan has cost his team in first round of the championship.

Down players were buying frees the whole match, what goes around comes around. The most comical example was when Coney nudged his marker and the Down player acted as if he'd been punched in the jaw. Dunno if it was on tv but it was hilarious.

and so we have it the Death of Ulster Puke football!!! or so some on here would like us to think, The Ulster Championship is like walking through a paddy field in Vietnam full of nasty surprises and today we got one the invisible Black card in the first half, that being said it was a roller coaster of ride for both sets of supporters today Tyrone folk thinking it was over at halftime then the Aristocrats coming out in the second half showing they too have some bubbles left in their champagne and showed bottle to edge over the line only for Seán ( Yes he's all MAN) Cavanagh to pull off an unlikely draw and take us back to the Future !. And to all those who think ULSTER football is dull , well I doubt they'll be a better provicial championship game this year . Tir Eoghain abú! Total faith.......

Will they show the 'foul' on Sean Cavanagh on the Sunday game?

Seriously think it's laughable that Cavanagh's being singled out for criticisn considering the amount of diving and time-wasting Down players were at. I suppose if you want Tyrone to be beaten you'll turn a blind team to the other team's antics.

I pray to God we get better than that! Don't let the exciting last 20 mins cloud the judgement. The first half was simply awful, it was the least intense half of footall I've seen in a long time. It was like a McKenna or O'Byrne Cup game.

The 2nd half was good though but if that's the best any province has to offer this year then the Champo would be awful! I expect the intensity and skill will be upped again in Newry next week though.

In fairness I thought the free at the end was a free. The Down player had a hold of Cavanagh. Pure stupidity.

A lotof diving (or creation of fouls!) by both sides today. Conditions played a part in it.

Isn't it great that there have been three Leinster championship games played this weekend unnoticed it would seem, yet theres a gaggle of Dubs on here only interested in talking about an Ulster championship preliminary game, what gives oh great Dublin faithful?

Cant believe reading this. The incident happened a full ten yards away from me in the stand and if the referee had have spotted the foul then I am certain it would have been a red (yellow was very lenient) - The reason Cavanagh fell to the ground is simply because Laverty drove his fist into Cavanagh's stomach thus winding him. Any action using a closed fist is deemed as striking and the appropriate penalty is red.

That said Coldrick had a shocker. He was poor towards both teams - Maginn should have saw black for the challenge on Donnelly that led to the penalty. To make matters worse Maginn scored a goal in the second half. Equally the equalising free may have been correct as Cavanagh was clearly fouled and getting pulled all directions as he tried to run for the ball. To concede such a scoring chance in such a tense finish in inexcusable from county players.

Down did improve in the final quarter owing to a number of factors. Tyrone got complacent - they felt they could step on the gas whenever they wanted to. It can be argued both teams didn't deserve to win the game but there is no doubting Tyrone were the more relieved team at getting another chance from a game they should have put beyond doubt in the opeing half.

The replay will be interesting - have Tyrone more to give performance wise? Obviously they do but can the same be said about Down as they will find it harder to pick themselves up having squandered a match winning position?

Shock horror! People interested in first high profile game of the summer and the only one on the TV today!

Are we not allowed give comment and opinion on an Ulster match brend? If I'd seen the 3 games from the Leinster Championship I'd make comment on them too!

I think you're being very harsh on Coldrick, apart from not giving a black card to Maginn (which was bizarre alright, but it looked like he forgot about the black card!) I thought he was pretty fair in the end. The game deserved to end in a draw, neither team really deserved to lose but Tyrone will have to improve if they're to fulfil the expectations of their supporters and the pundits.

There's no way the great Tyrone team of the previous decade would have blown a 2-9 to 1-5 lead, but they are still building I suppose so we'll see how things progress.

The only game on the telly Brend what do you want from us? If Wicklow v Laois was on the telly we'd be talking about that aswell.

What it actually tells me MesAmis, is that Dublin supporters are demonstrating total disdain for the rest of Leinster, so much so they would rather talk about the USFC, tell me I'm wrong here, TV coverage or no TV coverage.

That is why the Ulster Championship is the most exciting in the country by far. Tyrone got out of jail there but why didn't Benny Tierney start? Why is Mickey Harte still persisting with defenders like Tierney who was dreadful in the League

Benny Tierney did not start because he used to play goals for Armagh and probably has not played county football in ten years.

Great game but Down blew it and I see Tyrone winning and be hard to see them not beating Monaghan as they will be on a roll.
