Tyrone v Down

No complaints or excuses on the result, fairly beaten by a better team on the night. Harte learned more from the drawn game and adjusted accordingly

I hope now we can put to bed the nonsense that down are the guardians of the holy grail that is open expansive Gaelic football...there was only one team who came to play football last night...Sean cavanagh was being pulled and dragged every time he got the ball...some down players were only interested in starting melees..as for rte..well we all know what is going on there...and like last year we will have to deal with it...the powers that be are in dread of Tyrone getting to an all Ireland final...imagine the build up on rte with no Tyrone input....

How come so many angry Tyrone people were sitting at home and complaining about the RTE commentary rather than going out and supporting their team in a crucial game ?

Many of us were there last night and made ourselves heard in contrast to the few hundred down people who were in omagh last week

Comprehensive win for Tyrone; well done the lads.
Looks like we are playing the media as well as the
opposition again this year. Bring it on.

More than a few hundred Down fans in Omagh last week. If your going to sledge a county's support, at least get your facts right.

Well done to Tyrone last night. I actually don't think our performance was as poor as some are making out. Our problem is we only play in fits and starts. But we played some great football at times, especially the 5 minutes at the end of the first half. Dan Gordon was very good considering he hasn't played an inter-county game in 2 years. Conor Laverty was the only forward who looked interested. The problem was our defense couldn't handle Peter Harte, it was unfair to expect Conor Maginn to provide an attacking threat while chasing Peter back too. He should've been man-marked. He wasn't, and in my opinion he gave a master class on how to play wing back. Dan McCartan couldn't handle Coney, he was embarrassed. Amazing that wee James didn't make changes in the defense when the cracks were so clear in the 1st half. Anyhow, onto the qualifiers, 6 days later than I anticipated. Just a word of warning to some cocky Tyrone fans on here. If Monaghan beat you then your also in the 1st round qualifiers, like ourselves, so it might be a bit dangerous to talk about Ulster titles and days out in Croke park in May.

Home could be in another country just now thousands of miles away.
Has that thought ever crossed your mind?

A really good performance by Tyrone especially Midfield and Defence which had looked iffy until now. Justy at Full Back and Clarke in midfield seems the way to go.

So after two tough games, only one more tough game and we could be at the same stage as Kerry and Cork start.

I thought Peter Harte was the stand out player for Tyrone last night, didn't stop running all game. Very intelligent footballer.

Disappointing result on Saturday, but our players gave everything
and thats all we can ask.

Given that last week Tyrone had every look of a beaten team in the closing
stages in Omagh,it must go down as a missed opportunity similar to the
Donegal match last year.

Disappointment for the players. They have been soldiering away
valiantly for years, got within a kick of a ball of an all ireland
title but alas have no medals to show for it.

Benny Coulter is an all time great but time appears to be against
him winning an Ulster title now.

Get the heads up now and have a good run in the qualifiers to lift
the spirits of players and fans alike.

Down missed the boat in the first game. Tyrone were there for the taking but Down just didn't have the belief to see out the game. McCartan rightly got all the plaudits for his clever use of substitutions, the move of Coulter to midfield really caught Tyrone out. In the replay Harte had the answers. McCartan tried the same tricks but it was unlikely they were going to work again. Mattie Donnelly was able to nullify Coulter and Tyrone's midfielders bottled up the centre areas stopping Down from running the ball like they did in the drawn game. Harte and McGinley did a lot of damage running from the wings. Gormley and Steven O'Neill steadied the ship after Down's strong finish to the first half whilst it was a huge boost to have McNabb and Justy McMahon available. Monaghan will be a major test for Tyrone.

Down could with the right draws be a big player in the qualifiers. However, apart from about 25 minutes over the two games they didn't show the swagger you expect from Down teams. I would like to see them throw off the defensive shackles a little,

Now Down fans , nobody can miss close in frees like the one Down missed last Sunday week. The game was over had they scored but even after that they lost possession and let Tyrone back to level the game. I think Donegal on Sunday when Derry came back to just two points ended up putting 18 passes together to get the point that put three between them I think that is the difference between some teams, old dog for the road type of thing and would a younger Tyrone player have engineered that last free S Cavanagh did?? I don't think so. Down had a chance to close out the game and failed , there never should been a replay. And then to miss a penalty in the first minute in the second game, what bigger lift did Tyrone want. Fancied Down to do well in Ulster and thought they would have beaten Tyrone. Some good players there and they failed to win an Ulster. I know it's nice to win Sam, but anybody who plays for their county in the Ulster championship must surely love to win the Anglo Celt. And do you know what it almost as hard to win one as it is to win an All Ireland.
