Soft free , engineered free , call it what you like , these things will always happen in football . Swings and roundabouts . Fact of the matter was Tyrone were pressing for the final 3 minutes after being handed a way back into the game by Down and it's the gauntlet they ran . If that free by Down had been landed (I don't like criticising a player but it was a horrific miss), Tyrone , in my opinion , would not have scored again . They would have had to chase a goal and would have been relying on luck , probably lumping the ball into the forwards with plenty of Down men back . That miss put a bit of a spring back into their step and they showed a bit of composure to get the two points needed . Down have probably missed the boat but you never know with them . Aye but Zinny - the point is not about a ref getting a decision wrong as no one is perfect, it's the fact that there have consistently been wrong decisions made from this new rule came in to place. It's the fact that before the introduction of the new rules we seen inconsistent refereeing not only from week to week/game to game but within the one game. Now you add further confusion in to the mix we have and will continue to have decisions like the ones yesterday being debated as there will more than likely be more 'brain freeze' moments or as they say in the Scottish soccer scene, honest mistakes. Immense second half performance from Benny Coulter yesterday. REDANDBLACK30 (Down) - Posts: 1628 - 19/05/2014 13:29:09 1589979 Link 0 |
The point is Offside that no matter what decision a referee gives there will be posters on here saying it was the wrong one, the standard of refereeing is awful, there is no consistency etc etc. I am certain that Coldrick refereed the game honestly yesterday, he made some poor decisions but so did many of the players. I would say the biggest error yesterday was the 21 yard free, most U-12's would fancy scoring that, yet it is always the referee who gets the greatest amount of stick. We should be thankful that these men give up so much of their free time to referee, and I would suggest that while not a perfect referee, Coldrick is still one of the best in the country. The question that I am asking myself is what shape would Tyrone football be in if they lost S Cavanagh through whatever way s.g injury or retirement. muckla (UK) - Posts: 366 - 19/05/2014 13:57:48 1590039 Link 0 |
I am not for one moment questioning his integrity Soma. It does however highlight an issue within the GAA which those who run should maybe look to address rather than glossing over and maybe hold them to account, like they do in other sports. How do you hold the referee to account though Offside? You could refuse to give him any further games this year to referee in the championship, but if we accept that he is one of the best in the country, which I think he is, then the referee you replace him with is inevitably worse. Unless you believe there are better referees out there refereeing club games who don't make mistakes and whose decisions are consistent with all other top class referees? I don't think these men exist I am afraid, largely because the abuse that referees get for making honest mistakes is completely disproportionate and discourages many gaels from taking up the job. It is a tactic used by many managers these days to detract from criticism of their own team and their own decisions to blame the referee - the soft target. Even Tyrone fans are saying that Mickey Harte, who many believe to be the best manager in the country, made many bad decisions yesterday. Coldrick will be disappointed with some of his decisions and hope to go better the next day, the same as many of the players. Players, managers and supporters should concentrate on improving what they can improve, which is the standard of football and referees in their own county.
