Does hurling need an umpire test?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

I don't think umpires need a special test, just an eye-test, and don't spec savers have a special relationship with officials? But seriously umpires has arguably more say than a linesman and requires no special qualification to carry out this duty.

Yeah, and Tipp told the ref that their goal was a square ball! Are you from DOWN, another great hurling county!

regardless of where he is from he is entitled to his opinion and not have it shot down like that.

And they still don't know when a. Tipp player is standing in the square! Amusing, all the fuss about the issue with the points last Sunday but very little comment about the Tipp goal.

I did umpire a few times (football, not as hard as hurling) but the pitch had a wall behind the goals so you couldn't go back far enough to check the flight of the ball if it was very high. in that instance the ref and most people in the ground have a better view.
beside the posts is probably one of the worst positions in the ground to tell if a very high ball has gone between the posts

Great, your observation is improving! Now look now on the only Tipp goal last Sunday and OBSERVE O'Meara camped in the square. This thread is about poor umpiring, it seems you, and O'Shea, only want to mention what went against your team but the biggest error on the day was the square ball incident. Hawkeye is needed at times in football, a sliotar is much smaller so an umpire could be forgiven for getting some close calls wrong. But not been able too see a fully grown adult camped in the square is not acceptable. In fact Bubbles was in before the ball too but as it was marginally you could forgive the umpires.

Ye were done out of two points, the cats were done out of a goal.

I'll not sink to your level of nonsense as I'd expect more from a true Galway hurling follower whom I've encounter numerous times in my playing days and beyond.

I've always found that those who spout lines like this actually aren't that great at hurling themselves, but live off the backs of their fellow county men who's dedication to hurling would is unquestionable, normally from Tipp lads TBH, but it seems to have worked its way west as well, pity really.

It has already been highlighted in this thread that it is the referees job to call square balls. Some umpires may discreetly assist the ref on these calls, but if you read up on the role of the umpire, calling square balls is not one of them. I am not saying that I agree with it, but thats a quattion for another day.

bricktop, he sounds very like a poster who has ruined this board every summer over the last few years. I would love to see H/S do an IP address check to see if he is the same poster.
