Worst thing that happened to you on a pitch?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

We were struggling for 15 for a Minor league game. (many, many years ago)
Despite being barely 16 I was asked to play midfield, the perils of being a lanky teenager I guess.
The manager spent 15 minutes building me up, telling me I could do it.
Ball was thrown in, I went up, caught the ball over the head of their much bigger player. My glory lasted about half a second before I came down, landed on my head and was knocked out cold.
Woke up at home with no idea how I got there. One of the quickest substitutions ever I would imagine !
Mortifying.

2 things come to mind, missed a penalty in a West Kerry Semi Final, hit the crossbar and we lost by 2 points.. worse again was being sent off recently and I;m the coach, ah stop the shame of it there's me lecturing the lads about referees and respect and then I'm the first to walk

U-16 game against local rivals. Towards the end of a tight game i picked up a ball in our own box. Made the fatal error of trying to hoof the ball as far out of there as possible, instead of turning away from goal. Opposition player blocked the ball and it went straight into the net. I got some ********** from my goalkeeper. To make matters worse the player who blocked the ball dislocated his arm in doing so and needed an ambulance. To make matters even worse we lost by three points.

I think by the look on my face the goalkeeper realised that I didnt need to be told of my error, so he apologised for his outburst at the next training session. That made me feel even worse.

playing football at midfield for my club a good few years ago now, and wasn't doing too bad, winning just about every kickout.. then the opposition bring on some lanky 40+ year old guy. First kickout coming my way, he turns around and boxes me straight in the face. He then wins the ball , launches it down field and then turns smiles at me.... cue pandemonium as it happened right on our side of the field!!!

other than that just the usual hurling scars around the eye, hand and legs, broken thumb and fingers, a couple of cracked ribs, and missing a couple of teeth from pre helmet days..the joys of sport..

That's very good indeed KildareKelly. Funny.

The Wexford lads should be up here playing some rugby with the hidings ye are taking, tough upbringing ha! I see why ye have plenty of tough teams in the hurling now.

It was my first year at senior (in my early 20s, I'm a late bloomer!). It was the third league match, I was put on as a blood sub at wing back. I score 1-2 in the minutes I was there. #5 came back on and I didn't see a minute of time until the next year . . . at corner back!

Back in the day, lucozade sport was the in thing, but I'd guzzled one too many before a game and it had a very telling affect on my bowels which had become quite 'loose' during a game. Luckily I was a keeper and was wearing tracksuit bottoms tucked into my socks and there was no visible evidence although I was getting strange looks from the fullforward anytime there was a 70..

The changing rooms are right beside the bottom goals at my local pitch so when the final whistle blew I was in there like a shot fully clothed into the showers before anyone else had made it in from the warmdown.

I think I got away with it until now that is ;-)

Ran full pelt for a 50/50 ball in training a few weeks back. The problem was, the other fella didn't pull out either, I got his knee in between my legs at full force, with enough power behind it to lift both of us into the air put us on our backsides. Breaking my collarbone wasn't as painful. And the bruises for the next week will be hard to forget.

Good one lads. I've had a few injuries, broken nose, broken fingers and bones in the foot and a good few stitches, (about 40) but the worst Injury I had was a broken ankle in a gaelic match a day after getting myself onto the county minor panel. Club senior team who I had started the 2 previous games for went on to win a county and Leinster Senior club title while I was trying to get back. After I came back I couldn't make the minor club team. That was hard to take.

I got spat on by a lad who was marking me one day down in Wexford during a challenge match. I was 17 playing an under 21 game and I knew the centre back, I was going to town on the full back (had gotten about 2-4 at this stage) and he decided to try hitting me which made no difference. I caught a ball ran straight for goal he bounced off me and I buried it from 20 yards out. Turned to say well done to the wing forward for the pass and heard the noise of him clearing his nose and as I turned - spit right in the face. I just stood there in shock wiping it off my face. Decided not to hit him yet. Scored another 2 points and while running full force for a ball drop stuck my hurl into the ground and aimed the grip straight up hoping to trip him up. It caught him square between the legs and he managed to be almost paralell on top of the hurl before it cracked and stabbed him in the side, cutting him pretty badly. I wouldn't mind but I loved that hurl. We played them in a minor match about 6 weeks later and I was told I had to play Centre Back and he was to stay Full Back.

And lastly a player once told me he would sexually assault my sister (named her and all). I broke his nose, jaw, cheekbone and two of his teeth and two of my own fingers. Referee missed the whole thing and I walked off to be replaced. Got an apology from his teammates I would have played intercounty underage with but not from him.

Cucullain thankfully I think the standard of referring and allowing hackers to do as they want is coming to an end.

As a young lad over in London for the summer I was playing a game, inside corner forward next thing I hear a thud and our full forward was knocked stone cold out after the full back decided if he couldnt stop him from scoring within the rules he would stop him in other ways.
Umpires decided to ignore it, full forward got taken off, full back stayed on the pitch and game proceeded.

Also another game when playing in their London B Championship we were winning nicely against some crowd when they had a big gigantic mullaker who just decided enough was enough and started chasing guys on our team and throwing fists. he kept this going for the last 20 mins. Right in front of the ref and the ref continued to ignore it. Supposedly as this mullaker was playing in a hurling final or something the following week.
