No U16s to play County Minor

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

16 year olds can't play junior i thought. Don't you have to be in your first year of minor to play adult hurling or football now? Isn't that why the two fellas playing for the Antrim club were thought to be illegal (they were 16)?

Player welfare my eye. Where is all this nonsense going to stop. Weaker counties badly need U 16s n stronger counties adopt a holier than though approach. Another case of shafting weaker counties.
Player welfare very valid.
This is coming from Tipp where the only all Ireland minor football title in years was won with several u16s, the county hurling minor side regularly has several u16s involved.
This is about player development not shafting anyone

well weaker counties will just have to try harder then, wont they . stop moaning. there will always be stronger and weaker counties. every county cant be strong. the rule is correct. you cant have a young lad playing for his school, his club and under 6, his club at minor, his county and under 16 and his county at minor, possibly at both codes. along with maybe other sports too. county managers are pushing young amateurs too hard nowadays. it will all come to a head soon and there will be a strike. i wouldnt blame county players for saying "enough is enough" "pay us if you want us to become professional".
dead right. Too much put on young players. Too high risk of burnout, more injuries.
this is a great idea

if your good enough your old enough , thats as relevant these days as " your only as good as your last game "
now coaches teach your " as good as your best game " not last ,
phrases move on become outdated , it may have been acceptable to play/ flog a young kid who showed a bit of talent years ago , but thankfully theree are those that want to see a kid succeed at 26 not just 16 , putting county intrests over a 16 year olds welfare is not acceptable

Take my own county for example with just 3 hurling clubs. Our own minor county championship will most likely be contested by just 2 of these clubs (3 competed last year but it was just 2 for a number of years before that). So we've to come up with a county squad containing no U16s from this tiny pick. This will be the same for Cavan, Leitrim, Fermanagh, Louth & maybe others.

maybe the concept of a regional squad could be trailed at this level? if money is available to spread the hurling gospel start the ball rolling with the young lads. On the wider issue, it's probably a good thing but will have a much greater effect on the smaller counties but then again a lot of the rules changes do ie 5 subs etc

Regional team would be no addition. If there's a minimum number of club hurling games for juveniles & minors in these counties why limit what they can play at county level???

About time really.

Talented young players get enough games.

No just not trying to take thread off topic which you just did with that post.

16s better off not playing minor. Better for everyone. great decision

I agree no under 16 should be aloud to play in under 18 competition at county level. Player welfare should be the most important aspect here. Last year there was a certain player who had played minor for the last 3 years in Waterford. Before that player turned 18 he had operations on both his hips due to playing with multiple age groups. This is not the first time this has happened as i've heard of a few other players that are under 23 that have had the same operations. You can bury your head in the sand all you like but this is fact, and comments like "if their good enough their old enough" at that age group should never be a valid reason to overplay young players.

Would a better rule not have been to forbid minors from playing county U21???

Is that not already the case? And while someone playing up 2 full years in the case of an u16 playing minor(u18) happens often how often does someone play up 3 full years, u18 play u21?

Pity to see this motion being passed in a way...u-16 players who I can remember have a major impact on minor teams were Mark Lynch (Derry), Beano Mc Donald, Colin O' Riordan (Tipp - brilliant player), Ger Farragher (Galway) played midfield in the all-ireland minor final for 3 years running, Joe Canning, Noel Mc Grath, I am pretty sure Brian Corcoran started midfield in a minor hurling final for Cork even though he was only U-15!!
