growing up clare v tipp was very bitter and intense, but i dont mind tipp that much now, plus their have bigger rivalries with cork n kk, we also had a rivalry with Waterford for a while so which started in 98 and kept going for good part of the following decade, even when wtfd were flying clare would always fancy a cut off them. traditionally tho clare v limerick is our big local derby and could take off again this year after we beat them last year in croker.

the biggest rivalry in the GAA in my opinion is Tipperary v Kilkenny. It has it all, both have won huge amount of titles, although not in the same province, they are neighbours and have met regularly in AI finals n semis over the years, resulting in some classic games.

Cork V Kerry
Cork v Tipp
Dubs v Meath
Derry v Tyrone
Tyorne v Armagh
Kerry v Tyrone
Cork V Wterford
KK V Cork

all other big rivalries

I know here that we would have considered Kerry bitter rivals for many years, but i somehow doubt Kerry ever actually considered us rivals at all, that being said I always liked to see a Kerry doing well when Mayo were gone. The rivalry between us and Galway has seriously quietened down since the high of 2009, but i suppose that will quickly change when Galway finally when another Connacht at Mayo's expense. I think imo by 2020 Dublin and Mayo will be considered to have the fiercest rivalry of the decade, i know me and alot of other Mayo people love to beat Dublin more than any other team, no better feeling than a quiet hill full of Dubs.

galway mayo might not be the bitterist but certainly one of the biggest and has the longevity to back it. in my experience the most bitter rivalry was galway tipp in hurling late eighties and clare tipp in hurling in the nineties.

I imagine it feels the same as a silent hill full of mayo supporters. À la 2013 :)

The Tipp v Kilkenny hurling rivalry is pretty personal at the moment.

Cavan and Meath would have to play in the championship to see who was better, you couldn't say who was who at the moment!

Ballagh is in Roscommon as Yew Tree pointed out it was in Mayo up until 1899. Andy Moran is a Mayo man, his address is irrelevant!

Irrelevant? In fairness Andy Moran grew up,went to school and kicked his first football in county Roscommon.

Cavan and Meath would of been a hugh rivalry in the 40s and 50s. They where the first neighbouring counties to meet in All-Ireland final and this happened twice 1949 and 1952. Meath won their first ever All-Ireland beating Cavan but Cavan got revenge three years later when they beat Meath after a replay. Meath beat Cavan in the semies in 1954 when they won Sam and they also they met in 1950 league final which Cavan won.

A rivalry is one which draws the crowds - regardless of competition or age -group, Some of these in hurling don't pull any crowd in the NHL or underage,

a rivalry is one where they live/school/work together etc,

Newry - you have the Armagh/Down rivalry at club/school/county level

Dublin/Meath - for all the obvious reasons
tipp/kilkenny - has a great interest

i don't know about Cork v Kerry - its hyped up for their 1 championship meeting each year, but at club of NFL the crowds or interest is poor

Ulster has some great derbies Cavan v Monaghan, Derry v Donegal, Armagh v Down, Armagh v Tyrone, Derry v Tyrone. Outside Ulster the Dublin v Meath games of the 1980,s/1990's were awesome. Certain eras threw up big rivals Dublin v Kerry 1970's. Cork v Meath 1980's (this was the most bitter I'd seen). The Ulster championships of the early 1990's were fantastic especially the 1994 Down v Derry match and the 1995 Tyrone v Derry game at Clones which was the most intense match I was ever at. In the 2000's saw the big clashes between Kerry v Armagh/Tyrone.

Analyser, he still chose Mayo though cos Ballaghdereen is Mayo for football reasons. Do any Ballaghdereen people with Roscommon allegiances play for Éire Óg or other nearby Roscommon clubs?

The yard stick for rivalry has to be who you enjoy beating the most and for me from Clare that has to be Tipp. The 90's and early 00's was nasty stuff.

Not sure why my post didn't go through last night?

No choice GreenandRed, Ballagh club players can only play for Mayo for example Sean Kilbride couldn't play for Roscommon until he moved to St Croans if he had a choice it would have been different. Off the top of my head Sean McDermott is from Ballaghaderreen he plays for Western Gaels.
