Bitter Rivalries

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Personally at county level I've a few bitter tendencies towards Tyrone...incase you haven't noticed ;) Down and Armagh are big enough rivals but I find it's usually people from South Down who have the big grievances with Armagh in comparison to supporters further up the county.

Ballagh is in Roscommon as Yew Tree pointed out it was in Mayo up until 1899. Andy Moran is a Mayo man, his address is irrelevant! I'm from Ballyhaunis, about 4 miles from the Rossie border towards Ballinlough of the great Michael Glavey's club. This is the club of the legendary Dermot Early. It's also the club of his brother and last years Compromise Rules manager Paul Earley and the London manager Paul Coggins who both went to Ballyhaunis Community school as did other Roscommon intercounty players of various grades. I think it's more of a friendly banter type of rivalry with us and Roscommon but maybe we don't have as much time for Galway supporters, probably jealousy on our part after their All Ireland wins.

I was at the 2005 Ulster Final replay in a half empty Croke Park and the All Ireland Semi Final that year also between Tyrone and Armagh. The semi final was a great game with an ubelievable atmosphere. To say that both sets of players and many of the supporters were bitter rivals would be the king of understatements.

I wish I could say the feeling was mutual MDF but its not, you see, we just don't see Down as a threat and therefore they don't really figure in the Tyrone psyche so no hard feelings. Everything will become clearer on the 18th May!

Brend, staggering arrogance perhaps?

Down are a far more lauded and respected GAA county down the years than any of their Ulster counterparts.
Down broke down barriers for all 6 county teams and lets not forget that.
Down GAA have probably done more in the grand scheme of things for the GAA as a whole than the rest of us combined all thins considered.
Regardless of their current status (and they have come closer to Sam in recent years than any other Northern county) Down demand and deserve the respect of all Gaels.

They certainly have mine.

I think you should just stick with your Meath bashing Liam, I not qualified to comment on that if you catch my drift!

In this statement Liam you could easily replace Down with Mayo and Northern with Connacht, yet I don't see many of you boys paying them the respect they're surely due.

@Liamwalkingstown

Antrim got to the All-Ireland final in 1911 and 1912, also Derry won the league in 1947 and got to the All-Ireland final in 1958 so Down were not the only strong side back then

While my respect for Down is boundless, to say that they have come closer to Sam than any other Northern county in recent years is raising a few eyebrows in Tir Conaill!!

It hasnt been doing much talking over your way lately! ;)
I wouldnt say that there is much of a rivalry between
Tyrone and Down. A rivalry needs to be between evenly
matched teams! Downa re miles behind Tyrone at present,
so no rivalry here! ;)

Certainly, the most bitter rivalry I experienced was Tipp and Clare in the 90s. That was pure and utter hatred.

I would say that Clare's biggest rivalry ATM is Limerick. Although it isnt a patch on the 90s Tipp/Clare one. I think the Limerick boys dislike us more than we do them, but that i because we are AI champions and beat them comfortably last year.

I can see the Tipp/Clare rivalry picking up again from this year. I would love to meet them in the championship!! (hopefully the Munster final - fingers crossed)

Ill throw my hat into the ring with

CORK V MEATH 87/88/89/90

That was hatred. I mean they genuinely hated each other. Epic matches and my god was it physical. iv been to alot of matches over the years and never seen such hatred between two counties.

Cork and tipp is a great day out great matches but you would want your eyes everywhere at the cork meath games back in the day

Jasus was brilliant stuff

Wexford Kilkenny. The traditional Leinster final. Some fantastic and more disappointing days. 90s to early 00s was somewhat of a golden era for great matches there. Would love to get back to that
