Would have to say there is a fair few counties that what you could call bitter for Meath the most obvious are the bordering counties of Louth, Westmeath, Kildare, Offaly, probably the most bitter is Dublin albeit mixed with grudging respect, stemming from the fact that neither county ever beleive that they can't beat the other regardless of form book this was evident during Meath superiority in 80s and 90s and is also evident now during dubs superiority. Also got to say there is a not often match ups bitterness too with mayo and Tyrone. Where there is huge respect between Meath and down galway and cork, which maybe states we can take our beatings that some counties can't, as all 3 of those have beat us in all ire finals.

The only "bitter" rivalry we have is with Meath
Its a compliment to Meath that it is still relevant given the directions both teams have gone on in recent years.
Many Leinster teams hate us, proper hate us, but we dont hate them back. Kildare and Laois being chief amongst them. Meath are the only county with whom we have a genuine bitter rivalry.
That said, we actually get on well with the Meath lads once it over and there is no bad blood.

Living in Limerick I can tell you the Limerick Tipp rivalry is bitter bitter bitter and is not left on the field either at times.
Altho, to be fair to Tipp, I think this also is a bit one sided as I would wager Tipp lads would have Cork and KK as bigger rivals than Limerick.

would say with Roscommon its Mayo, you just have to see the Mayo posters when they go on the Roscommon page here. Also Leitrim hate Roscommon have some friends who seem to take more delight in Roscommon losing than in Leitrim actually winning.

Liam, its not really bitter! I think Tipp-Clare win that one

Dublin-Meath is like KK-Tipp, long history, hard rivals but not bitter bitter.

I would agree with that Liam. Tipp have bigger rivals in Cork and Kilkenny. I think the Limerick rivalry would be more intense if we more successful. They don't like playing us though as we love having a crack off them. I do respect their history and style of play though.

The village of Killaloe/Ballina is funny as its one village, split in 2, divided between 2 counties. On one side of the Bridge you have Killaloe, Co Clare. On the other side of the Bridge you have Ballina Co Tipp. When Clare beat Tipp back in the 90's at the height of the rivalry, the Clare lads put up a door on the pedestrian side of the bridge advising all Tipp lads that in order to cross from Ballina into Killaloe, they had to use "the back door" :)

I think Athlone is similar isnt it? Isnt part of Athlone in County Roscommon?

Bitter rivalry muck, don't flatter yourselves, you're nothing more than an irritating itch in the nether regions :-) Now Armagh back in the day, that's what you call a rivalry.

Right enough brend, we don't really do "bitter" here in Donegal. We leave that to you.

As for us being an "irritating itch in the nether regions" I also bow to your superior knowledge & experience in these matters.

Depends on what part of the county you are from. Various parts of Longford would have intense rivalry with Roscommon, Leitrim, Cavan and Westmeath. I suppose the most lauded ones in football would be Dublin/Meath, Cork/Kerry, Galway/Mayo and Tyrone/Armagh. Although bitter rivalry exists between even the weakest of counties.

News to me that Mayo v Roscommon is a bitter rivalry. I thought Mayo followers got most joy out of beating Galway.

Have no bitter rivarlies with anyone. As a GAA person, I have great respect for Kilkenny and all the other top counties. Would never describe myself as "hating" any county or club, I think that is a knackery English football style attitude.
Of course I love nothing more than getting one over Kilkenny but hate is far too strong a word. Where would we be without the rivalries?

Funny thing with a parish divided between counties one of the most bizzare is the parish of ballinabrackey/castlejordan. They are in Meath and play under ballinabrackey , Damian Carroll is from there current Meath player, also so was Chris O'Connor and the most famous peter Moore who was born in ballinabrackey but moved to clonmor which is in Offaly but in the parish. It also stretches to kinnegad in Westmeath Larry Giles former Westmeath great was actually a Meath man as he lived the far side of bridge, in 80s clonmor harps broke away and set up club so to be part of Offaly, also it touches Kildare on the ballyboggan side. And let me tell you the bitterness in that whole area is something else. When you cross the bridge in casylejordan kinnegad or ballyboggan you will be very careful if you got your. Meath jersey on. And vice versa for the other 3counties:)

Did i hear that Andy Moran or is it Alan Freeman is actually a Sligo man is it? Or a Roscommon man or something like that?

RD, am i right in thinking Evan Kelly was a Dub playing for Meath if you go along parish boundaries?

Not really into hating any one county for a prolonged period of time. Kerry would be considered a rival but can't say I hate them. Tipp can sometimes be hard to stomach. That Meath team of the 80's were very hard to like by bringing football to a new low. Between them and Dublin under Caffrey were the closest I ever came to hate.

MOD from what I know its the ones that live near Ballaghdereen that hate Roscommon. Andy Moran is the one people class as being from Roscommon, Ballaghereen is split between who is Roscommon and who is Mayo, think Morans family are considered a Roscommon family.

Am reading 'Four Kings' about Meath football (brilliant book by the way) and it underlines the fact that for both Dublin and Meath it has traditonally been the main rivalry. It did get a bit nasty in late 80s when they played one another probably too often, but there is no real hatred between the two. Neither ever considers getting beaten by the other as a loss of face, as each will always beleive they will get their own back. Same does not apply to other Leinster counties who absolutely hate Dubs and Royals because they rarely if ever beat them.

Even in the late 80s when Dubs/Meath games were as rough as hell, I was taken aback by the much nastier edge that existed between the Meath and Cork players. There was stuff happened in those games that would never have happened between Dublin and Meath which were ferocious but somehow adhered to a code. A rough code, but a code nonetheless! Cork/Meath seemed to allow for anything.

Rosineri1 - That goes back years ago under English rule when Ballaghaderreen was "moved" from Mayo to Roscommon (border re-drawn) and the GAA club refused to be moved and continue to this day to play football in Mayo. But we don't want to open that can of worms here.

I live in south Mayo about 5 miles from the Galway border so rivalry around my parts are with Galway. You would have north east Mayo people tell you its Sligo etc....depends where you live.

Portumna and Loughrea. Anyone who seen these two go at it in the mid 2000's will know what I mean.

Limerick , Tipp rivalry is normally caused by Limerick hurlers in the ditch!!!!

Only joking now!!!!!!

My family are for Limerick and we all have great banter no matter who wins. I work in Limerick and have many friends here.

Lots of the Limerick & Tipp players are good friends off the pitch or even related.

Eoin Kelly & Damien Reale I remember were great pals

Kellys are also related to the Morans from Ahane Niall & Ollie

Conor O'Mahony I believe is related to another Ahane lad who played for Limerick. Sean O'Connor perhaps ????

Lots of Tipp lads are in college in LIT , UL & Mary I and I dont see where this bitter rivalary is coming from.

James Ryan who hurls for Limerick his mother is from Tipperary.
